Seeking candidates for Staff Engineer atthe City of Brentwood, TN
Starting salary is $79k - $87k depending on experience.
Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period.
Plus: Transportation Allowance up to $2000/year to be distributed equally over 26 pay periods annually.
The City of Brentwood seeks self-motivated, goal-driven, and collaborative colleague to join its team as the Staff Engineer.
The City of Brentwood, located in scenic Williamson County, is considered one of the most desirable suburban locations in Tennessee with a population of approximately 46,000 residents.
As the Staff Engineer, you will be responsible for coordinating technical and regulatory aspects of the City of Brentwood's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General Permit (GP) for discharges from Small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s). This position develops, recommends, and implements policies and strategies for compliance with the MS4 permit required Minimum Control Measures issued under state and federal regulation. You'll also help to ensure that new development/construction meets City regulations and provide general support to the City's Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) program and other Engineering staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintains City's MS4 permit program, completes MS4 annual reports, and updates City's MS4 program by developing new programs and related Standard Operating Procedures as required under current TDEC Construction General Permit.
  • Develops and assists in management of CIP projects, reviews, and aspects of the City's Capital Improvement Plan.
  • Reviews permit packages and associated engineering studies required in the gathering of environmental permitting from outside agencies (TDEC, USACE, etc.) for capital projects.
  • Reviews hydrologic and hydraulic studies required for capital projects, and residential and commercial construction.

Minimum Training and Experience Required
  • Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from accredited college or university's 4-year program.
  • Educational background in hydrologic and hydraulic design, knowledgeable in residential/commercial construction methods, and an interest in the environment and stormwater management is preferred.
  • Experience with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's storm water program, regulations and erosion control measures is preferred.
  • Current and valid certification of Engineer in Training by passing the TN Fundamentals of Engineering examination is preferred, or ability to do so within 6 months of hire is required for retainment of position.
  • Must be certified by the Tennessee Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control Program - Level I and II - or must obtain certification within 1 year of date of hire.

(ADA) Minimum Qualifications or Standards to Perform Essential Job Functions
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines and tools which includes a computer, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, calculator, telephone, drafting tools, surveyor's level, measuring wheel, tape measure, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to ten pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.
DRIVER'S LICENSE: Valid Tennessee Driver's License in good standing or able to obtain a Tennessee Driver's License within six months of date of hire.
DATA CONCEPTION: Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative/technical information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.
LANGUAGE ABILITY: Requires the ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures related to the job of Staff Engineer. Requires the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and a well-modulated voice.
INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic to complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to the job of Staff Engineer.
VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to supervisors and officials; to explain procedures and policies; and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; determine time and weight; and utilize statistical inference.
FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with office equipment.
MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.
MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public, and officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions such as in interpreting departmental policies and procedures. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress and be able to manage several projects and/or tasks at the same time.
PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
