Staff Accountant - Payroll
Essential Job Functions:
- Prepare, verify and enter data for monthly and special payroll payments, computing proper payment according to employees' status (i.e., 10 month, 12 month) and showing all statutory and voluntary deductions, special payments, such as retroactive salary adjustments, forfeited annual leave, longevity, summer school and compensation bonus payments, contributions, and special withholdings; processes checks and/or direct deposits, including bank transit and account discrepancies pertaining to direct deposit.
- Maintain employment records and work closely with school bookkeepers and department heads to ensure accuracy in payment.
- Maintain employee payroll records, including data such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, retirement numbers, employment anniversary, years of state service, deduction information, direct deposit requests, tax forms, verifying changes in salaries and employment status as authorized by Human Resources, and any other items related to payroll records.
- Review time sheets, wage computation, and other information to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies.
- Work closely with employees preparing leave calendars for Leaves of Absences.
- Enter employee information into the payroll system, as needed.
- Compile statistical reports, statements, and summaries related to pay and benefits accounts, and submit them to appropriate departments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Two-year Associate Degree OR an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be successful in performing the position's duties and responsibilities
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of employees, vendors, and other audiences.
Desirable Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field.
- 2-3 years' experience in payroll processing
- 2-4 years' experience in using payroll systems or accounting system software.
4. Knowledge of NC Public School financial systems and processes.
