Sr. Process Safety Engineer - Springfield, MO

Curia provides global contract research and manufacturing services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

The Process Safety Engineer oversees and works towards the continuous improvement of the site's Process Safety Management (PSM) program. This includes managing, coordinating, and participating in process hazard analyses (PHAs); establishing compliance with regulatory and company requirements; and identifying hazards and mitigation approaches during the design, development, systemization, and operational phase of production. This requires knowledge of regulations, industry standards, production equipment, human factors, and manufacturing techniques.

Responsibilities

   Develop the site's Process Safety Management (PSM) program and ensure that the PSM procedures (e.g., Pre-startup Safety Reviews, Mechanical Integrity, Management of Change, Incident Investigations, Audits) are implemented and followed, and contribute to these as needed
   Coordinate the improvement of Process Safety capabilities, standards, and engineering controls at the site
   Develop best practice guidelines and SOPs for Process Safety
   Develop and deliver Process Safety training packages for the site
   Identify risks presented by operations and propose recommendations, such as engineering and administrative controls, personal protective equipment and proper use procedures
   Coordinate Process Safety testing for projects and provide advice based on their results.  This includes reaction calorimetry, thermal stability, dust explosion testing, etc.
   Author batch record chemical safety information and review, approve, and administer all safety procedures for batch records 
   Review transferring projects and new business opportunities for potential Process Safety impact/risk at the site. Provide direction on how business needs to be handled to remain in compliance and within acceptable risk levels
   Manage, lead, and author Process Hazard Assessments (PHAs) such as Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs) and Process Safety risk assessments and contribute as the Process Safety subject matter expert and track action plan implementation
   Perform other related duties as may be reasonably assigned in the course of business or as requested by supervisor or management
   Participate in self-development activities and training of others
   Perform other related duties as may be reasonably assigned in the course of business or as requested by supervisor or management
   Facilitation of Layer of Protection Analyses (LOPA) and participate in Safety Integrity Level Analyses (SIL) 
   Coordinate with internal and external toxicologists for the assignment of occupational exposure bands and occupational exposure limits for new and existing chemicals and develop and manage the site's potent compound handling and training program
   Manage the site's PPE selection program, including coordination of permeation testing and ensure incorporation into applicable documentation and provide technical feedback to EHS on or author safety data sheets (SDSs)

Qualifications

   Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline
   Minimum of 5 years' experience in a chemical process industry with a Process Safety focus preferred. A higher degree may be substituted for additional work experience
   Experience with hazard reviews
   Knowledge of chemistry and scale up preferred
