Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

At H3X, we are building the most advanced electric propulsion systems in the world to enable sustainable electric aircraft. At 12 kW/kg continuous, the HPDM family of integrated motor drives is a step change in electric propulsion technology and removes one of the main barriers blocking widespread proliferation of electric aircraft. We have several power classes of motors ranging from 30kW to 3MW and are selling to markets of aviation, aerospace and defense, marine, and specialized ground vehicles.

The HPDM motors includes an integrated Silicon Carbide inverter for high frequency, precise motor control. We are looking to hire a Sr. Power Electronics Engineer who will be in charge of inverter development and taking the design from prototype to production for one of our HPDM IMDs. You should be experienced in the entire product development cycle including requirements definition, design and analysis, and test and validation. You will be a key part of the core engineering team and will have a direct impact on the trajectory of the company.

§ REQUIREMENTS / CONCEPT

  • Requirements definition based on DO-160G and internal/customer specification
  • Explore new architectures/technologies that will improve performance, safety, and reliability

§ DESIGN AND ANALYSIS

  • Schematic and PCB design in Altium
  • Powerstage component sizing
  • Circuit simulation in Simplex, MATLAB/Simulink, LTSpice
  • Multiphysics simulation in Ansys Q3D for current density and parasitics analysis
  • Low inductance DC Link design
  • Design for EMC (Y capacitors, EMI filter, grounding)
  • Design for DO-160G

§ PROTOTYPE AND MANUFACTURING

  • Supply chain management for DC link capacitors, busbars, PCBAs, SiC devices, sensors, EMC filter, and connectors
  • Bill of Materials documentation management
  • Create assembly files and build instructions for manufacturing team/partners

§ TESTING AND VALIDATION

  • Create Design Validation Plan and Report (DVP&R) for sub-systems as well as completed system
  • Execute inverter testing and characterization on H3X in-house dynamometer
  • Post process test results, identify root-cause of potential issues and make design recommendations to meet the highest level of reliability and performance
  • Testing for EMC and DO-160G
  • Inverter reliability and partial discharge testing

§ INTEGRATION

  • Support pilot customers with first builds and integration into vehicles. Travel and on-site visits will be required.

§ OTHER

THE COMPANY:

At H3X, our mission is to develop the most advanced electric aircraft propulsion systems in the world to enable sustainable aviation. The current aerospace industry is moving at an incremental pace towards carbon-free flight and this slow rate of progress just isn't going to cut it if we want to hit the goals set forth by the Paris Climate Agreement. Innovation needs to come from the outside and that’s what we’re doing at H3X.

H3X Technologies is a U.S.-based manufacturer of high-power density integrated motor drives for electric aircraft and other high-performance applications. We are a team of multidisciplinary engineers and operators brought together with the singular purpose of developing the most advanced electric aircraft propulsion systems in the world to enable sustainable aviation on a massive scale. Our world-class team is composed of the best and brightest from Tesla, SpaceX, GE Aviation, and Siemens with deep knowledge in aerospace, electric machines, Power Electronics, material science, control systems, and advanced manufacturing. The high performance of our core technology is made possible by our own proprietary manufacturing processes for motor stacking, winding, and assembly, and all of the design and testing for our products is done in-house. Our 17,000 sq-ft headquarters in Louisville, Colorado is where we do all of our design, manufacturing, and testing. Our vision is to become the world’s leading supplier of aviation-grade electric propulsion systems by 2030.

We are well-funded and have backing from top VC firms around the world including Y Combinator, Metaplanet, TechNexus, Liquid 2 Ventures, Soma Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures to deploy capital for rapid scaleup.

H3X is an equal opportunity-affirmative action employer and considers all qualified applicants for employment based on business needs, job requirements and individual qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, past or present military service or any other status protected by the laws or regulations in the locations where we operate.
