The Sr. Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is part of a field-based team within the Medical Affairs Department at Emergent BioSolutions and plays an important role in establishing, cultivating, and maintaining relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (PhD, MD, PA, NP, RN, PharmD), and other stakeholders to deliver clinical, pharmacoeconomic, and technical education in the Infectious Disease/Travel Health therapeutic area. The Sr. MSL is responsible for leveraging his/her scientific background, industry knowledge, and business acumen to engage in appropriate, fair, and balanced, communication of objective, scientific information to internal partners and KOLs in an assigned territory supporting research initiatives, advisory boards, publications, education, and other scientific activities pertaining to Medical Affairs initiatives. The Sr. MSL is considered an established scientific and clinical knowledge lead on current and future Emergent products. Sr. MSL is responsible for staying abreast of current scientific and treatment landscape trends in therapeutic areas of interest related to Infectious Disease. The Sr. MSL role requires foundational competencies in the areas of focused communication, stakeholder engagement, product & therapeutic area knowledge, insight gathering & dissemination. The Sr. Medical Science Liaison will work closely with Medical Affairs ID leadership and other field-based personnel (National MSL Director) to ensure that Emergent maintains a strong clinical and scientific presence in the field. The role will report to the Senior Director, Global Medical Affairs, Infectious Disease.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identify, establish, and maintain collaborative relationships with Key Opinion Leaders, investigators, and institutions within academic, clinical, and healthcare organizations as they relate to the Infectious Disease/Travel Health therapeutic area.

Identification of key opportunities for scientific growth and medical evidence generation for the support of approved and pipeline products

Develop and maintain a territory strategic engagement plan, which includes clinical activities with identified opinion leaders (OLs), institutions, community practices, pathways influencers and advocacy organizations that align with medical strategy.

Provide relevant, unbiased medical and scientific information to meet the unique needs of each customer.

Actively participate in scientific dialogue, demonstrate understanding of the current standard of care, and regularly share scientific news with team members.

Develop and maintain clinical expertise in Cholera, Enteric Fever, Chikungunya, and other relevant scientific topics.

Medical insights: Actively listens for, documents, and shares medical insights. Proactively synthesize data and medical insights for MSL team and other partners from various engagement activities

Demonstrate an understanding of key medical and commercial strategies and provide medical support for commercial activities.

Provide regional and local support to enhance sales training initiatives and improve competencies of field personnel in partnership with Sales Training and Development

Provide high quality presentations to various audiences and engage in strategic discussions as it relates to medical, clinical, epidemiologic, and HEOR data with HCPs, government stakeholders, researchers, policy makers, medical directors, and pharmacists to advance the understanding of the therapeutic area.

Facilitate development of scientific materials to support scientific exchange aligned with medical strategy.

Provide professional medical affairs representation and support at global, national, and regional scientific meetings, including but not limited to staffing medical affairs booths, gathering competitive intelligence, and partnering with medical information to develop post-conference scientific materials.

Compliantly respond to unsolicited requests regarding medical inquiries or interests in IIS, study support, grant requests, and facilitate submissions through internal processes while consulting with investigator.

Provide on-site support to clinical operations for investigators in ongoing clinical trials, investigator-initiated studies, and registries consistent with company objectives and regulations.

Communicate Emergent's value and mission to key stakeholders.

Work cross-functionally with internal teams and departments to provide scientific support as needed.

Undertake various medical affairs projects as assigned by Medical Affairs leadership.

Ensure and maintain compliance with all company policies, laws, industry, and regulatory requirements.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS

Advanced scientific or clinical/medical degree required (MD, DO, PharmD, PhD) plus extensive experience in medical affairs activities.

10 years MSL/Sr. MSL experience (preferred)

Experience working in vaccines or Infectious Disease therapeutic area, and nonformulary products is preferred.

Robust and demonstrable success in KOL management activities across multiple specialties (ID, Pediatrics, Rheumatology, Immunology, Internal Medicine) is preferred.

Knowledge of geography and KOLs preferred.

Strong scientific knowledge as well as excellent presentation and teaching skills.

Working understanding of pharmaceutical industry compliance, PhRMA code, FDA guidance on advertising and promotion of prescription drug and medical devices

Ability to interpret and communicate scientific data to various audiences.

Self-starter with a strong team orientation

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to manage a demanding schedule and be flexible with evolving priorities. Strong overall written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills, customer focus and emotional intelligence Comprehensive experience using standard tools of field-based employees (CRM, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Teams)
