Senior Manager, Pharmacist

SUMMARY

Responsible for the operation and management of the commercial and compounding departments at the local Pharmacy facility. Plans, organizes, and implements pharmacy policies and procedures in accordance with established DVM policy, in cooperation with other departments and in accordance with accepted standards of good pharmacy practice. Works closely with the Pharmacist In Charge (PIC) to establish and implement policies and procedures for all operations of the pharmacy and for ensuring the pharmacy operations and practices comply with all requirements of federal and state pharmacy and drug laws, rules, and regulations.

Coaches and directs the development of the pharmacy team to ensure employees are being challenged, motivated, and rewarded, and that processes being used maximize efficiency. The manager supports the mission, vision, and values of the company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates and manages the Pharmacy at DVM:

  • Lead the day-to-day activities within the compounding and commercial departments to include daily fulfillment operations, clinical operations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Drive quality and operational effectiveness. Design and manage workflows to ensure efficiency and timely completion of orders.
  • Accountable for product quality and SLAs. Establish satisfactory methods of drug distribution and control.
  • Establish department objectives, identify concerns and opportunities, and make recommendations for change, when needed; plan, organize and direct general and pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Establish quality specifications for all drugs and chemicals stored in the pharmacy in accordance with the recommendations of the Pharmacy and Animal Health community.
  • Establish reporting and approval procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with their team and upper-level leaders, including conveying all information that may impact order processing, shipping methods/timing, or all to customers.
  • Participate in training programs, continuing education, and professional development opportunities to stay updated on pharmacy techniques, regulations, and industry advancements to maintain professional competency and proficiency and comply with the National Standards of Continuing Education.
  • Maintain full knowledge of all related SOPs, laws, and regulations inclusive of safety procedures.
  • Maintain a strong track record of reliability and punctuality.
  • Responsible for design, development, and implementation of distribution projects. Designs all information and reporting tools necessary to implement projects and evaluates the successes of each.

Supervises pharmacy personnel:

  • The Pharmacist, Senior Manager, will have Pharmacist Leads directly reporting into this position and through them manage a team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Each Pharmacist Lead supervises a dosage form or commercial function.
  • Leads, directs, and coaches employees in the overall functionality and effectiveness of the pharmacy.
  • Develops departmental and individual performance goals. Completes performance appraisals, conducts performance conferences, determines appropriate compensatory rewards, and handles discharges.
  • Sets departmental productivity, accuracy, and safety goals, tracks progress toward goals, and communicates progress to employees.
  • Develops and utilizes educational and recognition programs to enhance employee engagement and support career growth of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians at the facility.
  • Ensure the pharmacy is adequately staffed including participation in and driving of hiring and retention efforts, including provision of training and educational opportunities. Handle employee concerns and corrective action, when necessary.

Dispensing Medications:

  • Responsible for receiving customer orders, applying clinical knowledge to appropriateness of prescription orders, enter order into pharmacy computer system, and verify order processing.
  • Collaborate with other pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to fulfill orders.
  • Answer questions/provide consultation for veterinarians and animal owners.
  • Provide drug information to veterinarians and all other appropriate customers or sales personnel.

Regulatory supports:

  • Ensure maintenance of licensure by adhering to Pharmacy regulations
  • Support the maintenance of Accreditations (Vet-VIPPS; PCAB)
  • Keep current on pharmacy laws and regulations.

Additionally, ensures the pharmacy complies with the regulations of all applicable government agencies regulating drug and pharmacy storage, distribution, and transportation, such as OSHA, DEA, DOT, and AIB.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technicians, and ancillary personnel

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy or Pharm.D. degree from an accredited school of Pharmacy.
  • 5-10 years, pharmacy experience and 5+ years, pharmacy management/leadership experience required.
  • Experience with veterinary products preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must have and maintain pharmacist licensure from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and be in good standing with that state board and other state boards as required.
  • Licensure in those non-resident states requiring a pharmacist to hold licensure as requested by corporation.

COMPETENCIES (SKILLS AND ABILITIES)

  • Able to lead a comprehensive team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians effectively to accomplish established objectives.
  • Able to read and follow Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) and complete basic mathematical calculations used in the role.
  • Able to work on routine and moderately complex compounding task assignments.
  • Full knowledge of veterinary medications, dosages, and compounding preferred.
  • Full knowledge in using compounding equipment and software systems, including automated compounders and inventory management systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of accuracy and potency in all compounding activities while meeting deadlines.
  • Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.

  • Must be able to read reports and computer screens, hear well enough to communicate with colleagues, walk and stand for extended periods, and operate electronics such as computers, lab equipment, and telephones.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with hazardous chemicals, pharmaceutical ingredients, and other chemical and biological hazards. May be required to wear an N-95 mask, gloves, safety glasses, and other personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to stand for the majority of scheduled workday and may occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • A person may need to place, turn, pinch, push or pick up small objects as part of their job tasks. Also, finger dexterity is required for tasks such as turning pages, typing, writing, pushing buttons, or operating intricate machinery.
  • Must comply with Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) standards, dress code, and hygiene requirements in accordance with Covetrus SOPs and USP standard guidelines set by USP 795, 797, and 800. Notable guidelines include no jewelry, no makeup, no beards, no mustaches, no nail polish, no artificial nails, wearing of scrubs (when applicable) and the wearing of closed-toe shoes for entirety of work schedule.
