Job Summary:
BB&E is seeking a Sr. Fire Protection Engineer to Support to the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic program. Personnel will be supporting the work in Norfolk, VA but can be seated at Norfolk, Naval Station, in Norfolk, VA, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, ME, NTC, in Great Lakes, IL or PNYA in Philadelphia, PA.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide independent, timely and professional FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing support, services and consultation for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands, including minor works projects, specific projects, special projects, military construction (MILCON), demolition, maintenance, space utilization and facilities development.
- Participate in conferences with project stakeholders and collaborates with other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure system coordination and integration with specific project requirements.
- Typical projects include: FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing services for life safety, type of construction, height and area requirements, separation distances, fire rated construction, spray-applied fireproofing, firestopping, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, mass notification systems, clean agent fire suppression systems, base-wide fire alarm reporting systems, water distribution systems, hydraulic analysis, fire modeling, and performance-based designs of major size and complexity for use in government facilities, including multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, training, and similar structures.
Job Qualifications and Skills:
- Registration as Professional Engineer (PE) in the discipline of Fire Protection Engineering is required.
- Substantial professional knowledge and practical application of FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing concepts, theories, principles, practices, and techniques necessary to plan, design, construct and maintain a wide range of shore-based engineering projects.
- Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria and policy, industry codes and standards, and standard practices as related to FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing design, including the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, International Building Code (IBC), International Mechanical Code (IMC),International Residential Code (IRC), FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheets, Society of Fire Protection Engineer's Handbook, and various other industry standards.
- Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign country laws, codes, and other statutory requirements affecting FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing design throughout the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic AOR.
- Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields and their associated impacts as related to FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing design. Ability to make oral presentations of proposed designs and results of studies.
- Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing design and analysis software and other applicable DoD computer systems and software used by the Command.
- Ability to produce results of analysis in writing and consolidate findings of others and evaluate recommendations and facts.
- Knowledge of budgeting, planning and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams.
- Knowledge of and full compliance with Safety Policy and Guidance, and use of personal protective equipment.
Experience:
- A minimum of 10 years of professional FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing code compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience, is required.
Education:
- Completion of a course of studies accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineers and Technology (ABET) for a FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing program from a college or university for a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERing, supplemented by a considerable amount of hands-on facilities design experience, is required. If degree is in mechanical engineering, then a PE registration in the discipline of Fire Protection Engineering is required
Physical Requirements:
- Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to sit/stand for extended periods of time.
- Working conditions:
- Ability to work both indoor/outdoor (with exposure to the elements)
- Ability to walk/climb/knee/crouch and reach
- Ability to work on rough terrain when necessary
- Exposure to hazards/contaminants at times
- Ability to work in confined spaces and/or heights
