Job description

The Sr. Donor Center Associate will oversee blood collection operations, assuring that all activities take place in an efficient and compliant manner and that donors are managed in a way that optimizes the collection opportunities. This position also will:
Perform physicals and obtain medical histories and inform consents from prospective donors
Perform whole blood collections and automated blood collections on volunteer donors
Assist with donor recruitment of volunteer donors and coordination of directed and autologous blood donors
Ensure that equipment and supplies necessary to screen donors and perform whole blood and automated blood collections are in adequate quantities and meet established quality control standards
Assist in the training of new staff and annual staff competency assessments
Perform 100% review of donor history forms before label and release
Help to maintain a work environment conducive to providing excellent customer service

Minimum Education
Associate's degree or equivalent in Medical Technology or equivalent related field of science. (Required)
Minimum Work Experience

Four years relevant work experience is required.

One year supervisory experience required (in-charge or preceptor experience included).

Two years' experience in blood collection preferred. Experience in customer service with successful record of providing customer satisfaction. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Excellent overall knowledge of donor criteria.
Excellent knowledge of donor interview and blood collections process
Must be able to manage changing priorities.
Ability to solve problems and work both independently and as part of a team.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills important.
Computer knowledge and skills necessary.
Basic math calculations plus proportions.
CPR Certification within the first two months of hire.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Prefer registry or eligible as MLT(ASCP or AMT), or certified by HEW or a similar regulatory agency, or licensed LPN in the District of Columbia. (Preferred)
Functional Accountabilities
Donor Management

  • Interview prospective donors to obtain detailed medical history; obtain appropriate specimens; assess patient information, laboratory data and physical condition to determine suitability of donor according to established guidelines.
  • Explain donation procedure to prospective donors, assess understanding and modify presentation to assure the informed consent is accurate.
  • Coordinate donor flow and daily staff assignments.
  • Assess staff's training needs and coordinate training opportunities as they arise.
  • Coordinate and perform annual staff competency assessments.
  • Perform 100% review of donor history forms before label and release.

Blood Collection

  • Routinely perform whole blood and automated blood collections in a manner which guarantees the maintenance of a sterile blood path in the Blood Donor Center's fixed site(s) and Blood Mobile(s).
  • Monitor donors continually for alterations in vital signs and adverse reactions.
  • Function as a resource for staff in regard to donor criteria and vein suitability.
  • Assist with the investigation of problems related to collections.
  • Assist in meeting projected collection goals.

Quality Control

  • Review equipment maintenance and quality control records.
  • Maintain documentation of all procedures to meet requirements of regulatory bodies.
  • Perform and/or ensure all quality control procedures as scheduled are done on a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly time frame.
  • Maintain equipment and chemical inventory lists and ensure compliance with required testing and preventative maintenance protocols.

Cost Effectiveness

  • Responsible for efficient and cost-effective use of supplies and reagents.
  • Monitor supply inventories to assure adequate availability.
  • Search for less costly ways of performing duties.

Continuing Education

  • Participate in continuing education opportunities available internally and/or externally.
  • Minimum 20 CE credits annually.

Non-Essential Function

  • Annual unscheduled absence episodes: NM: 6 or more PI: 4 - 5 or less VP: 3 or less ES: 2 or less EP: 1 or less.
  • Available and punctual as scheduled.
