We are looking to add a Sr. Commercial Underwriter to join our new and growing Programs team in Waukee, IA. The ideal professional will possess excellent customer service skills and serve as a technical resource to a growing underwriting team. As a Senior Commercial Underwriter within Programs, you will have the opportunity to build a portfolio of Program business collaborating with a supportive internal team and with agent and carrier professionals. You will have the opportunity to help create and continuously improve underwriting guidelines, efficient workflows and operational processes that deliver optimal value for clients and partner stakeholders. In this role, you will exhibit the ability to understand client business operations and apply underwriting expertise to create best in class risk solutions and services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Advanced knowledge of property casualty coverages and the ability to apply that knowledge to drive targeted results
- Comfort level with underwriting complex business, with support as needed, exhibiting independent initiative
- Working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and governance
- Desire to be proactive, be a thought leader, mentor and advisor to others
- Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining strong working relationships with all internal and external business partners
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to articulate value, solve problems and create positive interactions
- Advanced negotiation, presentation, and critical thinking skills
- An ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions
- A strong foundation of technical underwriting knowledge and analytical skills empowering sound decision-making
- Working familiarity with insurance agency and / or carrier systems
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High school diploma; college degree preferred. Active state specific Property Casualty Insurance agent’s license required or the ability to acquire license within three months of hire.
- Experience: Minimum 5+ years commercial underwriting experience in the property and casualty insurance industry.
Responsibilities:
- Manages and Underwrites a Program portfolio of business
- Reviews Program results monthly making changes as needed to create continuous improvement for all stakeholders
- Maintains compliance with applicable Underwriting guidelines and authority initiating carrier referrals as needed
- Engages agent and carrier contacts responsively with consistent actions and dialogue enhancing production activity with targeted new and renewal opportunities
- Approaches overall portfolio with a strategic perspective effectively managing issues related to class, line of business, geography and overall mix objectives
- Identifies and investigates appropriate resources to resolve complex insurance issues ensuring client, agent and carrier satisfaction
- Acts as a trusted advisor and solution provider to Brokers and Agents and a consultative resource for all contacts leveraging subject matter expertise
- Welcomes opportunities to handle larger and more complex accounts and Programs, be a technical and sales resource, as well as a mentor to Commercial teammates
- Participate in projects to further advance the Organization’s objectives and enhance individual growth and development
