Job description

Nemours is seeking a Speech Language Pathologist, Hearing Loss Specialist in our Outpatient Therapy Department.

This position is to support growth and advancement of the cochlear implant program and the Nemours Children's Ear Hearing and Communication Center (NCEHCC). This SLP, with focus on Listening and Spoken Language (LSLS), will provide assessment and treatment of the audition, speech, and language skills of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, as part of the multi-disciplinary cochlear implant team . We are looking for a candidate with : Listening and Spoken Language AVT or AVEd certification, or candidates in process of or willing to pursue the certification.

This will be a position that specializes in the AVT (Auditory Verbal Therapy) population.

Located in Orlando, Fla., Nemours Children's Hospital is the newest addition to the Nemours integrated healthcare system. Our 130-bed pediatric hospital also features the area's only 24-hour Emergency Department designed just for kids as well as outpatient pediatric clinics including several specialties previously unavailable in the region. The position will provide Speech-Language Pathology evaluation, treatment, and consultation independently to patients within a program under the prescription of a physician and within the guidelines designated by departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Direct Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficiency in the care of pediatrics patients ages birth to 21yo related to typical communication development and the impact of hearing loss on all areas of development.
  • Demonstrates competency in the area of pediatric Speech Language pathology as per department clinical competencies.
  • Provides direct diagnostic, habilitative and rehabilitative services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing in the areas of spoken language and auditory-verbal perception.
  • Works collaboratively with audiologists, otolaryngologists, and social work.
  • Supports children's optimal auditory access and use of amplification for the development of spoken language.
  • Provides care using a family-centered approach that empowers parents to become their child's primary teacher.
  • Completes timely documentation as required by departmental policy and The Joint Commission, and CARF standards.
  • Attends meetings related to patient treatment and contributes to discussion as an interdisciplinary team member.
  • Maintains knowledge of insurance referral/authorization process and documentation requirements related to therapy services.

Indirect Patient Care Responsibilities
  • Staff development: assesses existing and develops new activities that promote general knowledge and professionalism within the department; participates in peer review process.
  • Keeps current with trends and research in the field of hearing loss.
  • Attends inservices/continuing education, provides updates in the form of inservices to associates. Participates in professional learning opportunities as required by state specifications, Nemours, and hearing loss program.
  • CQI: participates in program, discipline, specialty, and hospital-wide CQI projects.
  • Program Development: participates in activities to increase program use, awareness, and marketing. Attends program meetings. Contributes to achievement of department/program goals. Collaborates with community partners and participates in hearing loss related community events. Provides outreach assistance to outside professionals concerning the communication needs of individuals with hearing loss.
  • Clinical Education: Assists in mentoring affiliating speech-language pathology students, new speech-language pathology staff, support personnel, and volunteers. Adequately and appropriately supervises CFY staff.
  • Team work: Participates in single discipline, multi-disciplinary, and specialty teams.
  • Professional Development: Developing ties with professional organizations. Provides educational inservices and experiences to the discipline/program and outside community. Attends speech-language pathology meetings as scheduled in the hospital. May participate in promotional activities for speech-language pathology and/or hospital.

Job Requirements
  • Master's Degree required.
  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years experience required.
  • Florida State License to practice Speech Language Pathology required.
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification required upon hire.
  • Member of professional specialty organizations (ASHA, FLASHA), preferred.
  • Must be available for weekend shifts.
