The Special Populations Advisor reports to the Associate Dean of Student Services and works to make education accessible for all students at Lamar State College Orange. Duties and responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
Responsibilities:
1. Works predominately with Special Populations of students including, but not limited to, individuals with disabilities, single parents, individuals from economically disadvantaged families, individuals pursuing nontraditional fields, etc.
2. Ensures access to our courses for these students by coordinating assistance programs including disability support services, daycare assistance, transportation assistance, and any additional assistance services should the need arise.
3. Provides academic advising and registration assistance to prospective, new, and continuing Special Populations students.
4. Maintains all necessary confidential records when students receive assistance services and prepares bi-annual report on services provided and student retention. Prepares and provides records for Perkins Basic Grant reporting
.5. Answers and initiates phone and email communication to provide general information regarding special population program assistance and other LSCO programs and services.
6. Networks with organizations making working relationships and collaborations with community representatives that may assist Special Populations students.
7. Advises and registers general student populations, as needed.
8. Advise students on and help navigate the process for drops, adds, and withdrawals.
9. Advise students on course sequences, degree planning, and the graduation process.
10. Perform other appropriate duties as may be determined.
Qualifications:
Associate Degree required. Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, communication, or related fields preferred.
Experience working with Special Populations preferred, experience in higher education or secondary education preferred.
Knowledge of the following is required:· Diagnostic testing and development of individual educational plans.· Community resources in order to act as a liaison for special population students.·* Computers, spreadsheets, and other data management.· *Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of academic advising techniques, the Texas State University System, and job placement is preferred.
Requires constant sitting, walking, and seeing. Requires frequent standing, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects up to 25 pounds; operating a calculator, personal computer, and various office equipment. Requires infrequent stooping, bending, sorting, and filing.
This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215.
Normal office setting, may require infrequent local travel for informational events and professional development.
Salary: $35,000
