The Divisions within Transportation Maintenance are responsible for sidewalk maintenance, curb and gutter maintenance, asphalt maintenance, storm sewer maintenance, right of way mowing, snow and ice removal, downtown cleaning, resurfacing and pavement preservation, bridge maintenance and private development/utility inspections. The 218 person staff maintains over 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks, over 33,000 curb ramps, 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes and over 32,000 drainage inlets.
The Transportation Special Operations Unit is responsible for sweeping and flushing streets, nuisance abatements, Graffiti Removal, leaf collection, cleaning up illegal dumping and spills, cleaning catch basins and pipes, managing traffic control and clean up for events downtown including the Raleigh Christmas Parade and First Night.Primary Duties:
- Operating various tools and equipment associated with Graffiti Removal
- Operating dump or flatbed trucks to haul employees, tools, and supplies to job sites
- Assisting nuisance abatement crews in landscaping and removing debris from properties
- Assisting in cleaning debris from streets and dead ends
- Operating dump truck with leaf machine attachment during leaf collection season
- Operating snow removal equipment during inclement weather.
- Other street maintenance related duties may be assigned.
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during leaf collection, emergencies, and inclement weather.
- Operates dump trucks and flatbed dump trucks
- Performs unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance
- Selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
- Performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
- Operating dump truck with walk behind leaf machine during leaf collection
- Inspects and maintains tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment
- Inspects facilities and structures; identifies and documents required repairs
- Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during leaf collection, emergencies, and inclement weather
High School Diploma or GED and two years of maintenance experience related to assignment.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License, Class A preferred; or ability to obtain permit within 90 days of hire or reasonable established timeframe.
- Tanker endorsement is encouraged
