JOB SUMMARY

The South Central Region Director will implement and expand all Special Olympics Kansas programming in the South Central Region of Kansas (Wichita, El Dorado, Emporia, Hutchinson, etc.). Primary programming includes but is not limited to all regional Special Olympics sports competitions in the area and supporting Local Program development and training This position will also play a significant role in other Unified Champion School programming, Health and Fitness initiatives and all state sports competitions in the Wichita area.

WORK LOCATION

This position will work in a remote capacity from their home in Wichita, Kansas. The state office for Special Olympics Kansas is located in Mission, KS.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide on-going sports training, competition, and technical support to local programs within the South Central region, including:
    • The number one priority of this position is planning and managing all regional sports competitions and training within the assigned region.
    • Register new and returning athletes within the region into the games management system ensuring all registration and medical forms are up to date.
    • Recruit and manage volunteers, volunteer committees, and athletes working and/or attending events.
    • Support SOKS' volunteer registration policies and procedures.
    • Develop and maintain working relationships within the local sports community.
    • Serve as a resource and for local programs and coaches.
    • Communicate activities and events within the region to local programs, coaches, family members, volunteers, and HQ.
    • Assist with the coordination of family activities as needed.
    • Assist the HQ sports staff in the creation and coordination of statewide sports plans for Special Olympics Kansas.
    • Manage volunteer recruitment and on-site coordination for state-wide competitions within region.
    • Implement strategies and abide by SOKS, SOI, and SONA regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Promote and carryout the mission of SOKS.
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Unified Champion Schools Programs
    • Coordinate Unified Champion School programming for schools in the South Central Region
      • Unified Sports
      • Promote KSHSAA Unified Bowling
      • Unified PE
    • Assist in designing and developing the plan, quarterly goals, and measures of success for selected strategy points
    • Collaborate with UCS team to develop resources to communicate about UCS to various audiences
  • Health and Fitness Programs
    • Support implementation of health and fitness programs with local teams in your region
    • Provide other regional level support of the Health and Fitness program at SOKS
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & RELATED EXPERIENCE

  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • A minimum of two years of previous experience in sports event program planning and implementation of multi-year projects is required.
  • Previous experience working as part of a team to manage events and volunteers is preferred.
  • A background in Special Olympics through previous volunteer experience and/or professional employment is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of managing sports and athletics.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, including an ability to build and maintain networks with diverse populations, provide advice, speak in front of groups, and communicate effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple projects and achieve high-pressure goals within established deadlines.
  • The ability to travel on workdays, evenings, and weekends.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES AND INTERACTIONS WITH OTHERS

The South Central Region Director has no full-time supervisory responsibilities. However, the role will be expected to interact daily with coworkers, current and prospective partners, teachers, administrators, athletic and activity directors, and the general public. The position must be able to effectively manage day of event volunteers and games management volunteers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and see using close- and/or distance-vision, and use their hands to touch, grasp, or type. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Duties are typically performed in an office environment. The work environment is usually a well-lighted environmentally controlled indoor environment with a moderate level of noise. This is a full-time position, and the hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work hours may vary depending on operational activities and required duties; evening and weekend work may be occasionally required.
