POSITION TITLE: Special Education Paraprofessional
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 182-days/school term, 2023-24 SY
RANGE OF SALARY: Determined by salary schedule 2023-24
SALARY SCHEDULE: S2/1P
LOCATION: High School
EVALUATION: As required by NDSCC and Belcourt School District #7 policy
JOB GOAL: To assist teachers in instruction of students enrolled in Special Education programs, and to provide other supportive duties and activities (e.g., classroom management, one-on-one or group assistance, out-of-classroom supervision, etc.) to facilitate the educational and social experiences of students.
SUPERVISED BY: Special Education Director and assigned teacher.
Certification/Licenses: State of ND Department of Public Instruction Paraprofessional Certificate of Completion.
Education: Adequate requirements to obtain a North Dakota Paraprofessional Certificate (Minimum HS diploma, GED).
Must have a favorable background check.

REQUIREMENTS: Personal Attributes: Punctuality, reliability, positive human relations skills; personal conduct appropriate to a positive role model for students in areas of lawfulness, behavior, and moral character.
Communication Skills: Shows courtesy and respect to students, parents, members of the public, and other staff members in all face-to-face and telephone communications. Has the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals; has the ability to understand written and oral instructions. Has the ability to communicate clearly in speaking to students and staff. Can prepare correspondence, reports, and other written communications in final format from oral instructions or from drafts, notes, or other document ensuring grammatical correctness and spelling. Has the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in written form (e.g., reports, business correspondence, newsletters, handbooks, and procedure manuals) within the school system to students and staff.
Computer Skills: Can navigate using web browsers; can execute web searches and communicate via email. Understands basic file manipulation (open, edit, save, copy, cut, paste) and printing of documents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists teacher, other professional staff members, and other paraprofessionals in classroom management and supervision.
2. Prepares bulletin boards, visual aids/supports, etc.
3. Provides copy services (e.g., printing, copying, sorting, stapling).
4. Performs secretarial and/or computer-related duties as needed.
5. Maintains attendance, grades, student behavior logs, and other records as needed.
6. Checks/grades papers and monitors students during tests.
7. Provides instruction to individual students or groups of students answering questions and providing one-on-one help as needed under the direction of the supervising teacher.
8. Monitors student behavior in classroom and out-of-classroom activities (e.g., campus grounds, hallways, bathrooms, lunch areas, buses, lyceum programs, field trips, etc.).
9. Performs light housekeeping tasks as necessary (e.g., straightening, dusting, picking up, cleaning of whiteboards, etc.).
10. Provides a positive educational and social experience as prescribed in students' Individual Education Plan (IEP) which may include: a. Understanding the student(s)' disability. b. Loading/unloading students who are wheelchair-bound or may have other debilitating disabilities. c. Assisting students with limited mobility (e.g., navigation of hallways, lunch areas, bathrooms, campus grounds, etc.). d. Assisting students with adaptive equipment and devices (e.g., hearing aids, auditory trainers, standers, splints, braces, assistive technology devices, wheelchairs, and feeding devices, exercise equipment, production machinery, etc.) e. Assisting students with self-help skills (e.g., feeding, dressing, personal grooming, and bathroom hygiene - which may include changing of diapers and/or other personal hygienic products). f. Providing adaptive learning and curriculum implementation as requested by the teacher.
11. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and established administrative procedures.
12. Is familiar with and abides by applicable confidentiality, privacy, FERPA, FLSA, and HIPPA regulations.
13. Takes necessary and reasonable precautions and actions to provide for student and staff safety and to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.
