At Sankofa, the Special Education paraprofessional is a critical role aimed at providing dedicated support to students with disabilities, particularly students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As a paraprofessional, you will work closely with school staff, your assigned lead teacher, and members of the Special Education department to implement academic, social/emotional, and behavioral support to your assigned students. This role offers a valuable opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the student's academic and social-emotional development within the Montessori environment. The position reports to the Director of Student Support and Services.

Role Overview
The Special Education Behavior Support paraprofessional will provide direct support to assigned students within their assigned classroom and across the school building, as needed. The Special Education Behavior Support paraprofessional will work collaboratively with school staff, including general education teachers, Special Education teachers, and paraprofessionals to implement individualized behavior intervention strategies designed to decrease the occurrences of target behaviors and promote social interactions and academic engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide academic and Behavior Support to assigned students utilizing evidence-based strategies to decrease occurrences of target behaviors and support their success in the classroom.
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) with fidelity, adhering to the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and school protocols.
- Collect and accurately record data on target behaviors and interventions implemented, ensuring data integrity and reliability.
- Collaborate with the student's educational team, including Special Education teachers, therapists, and administrators, to review progress, adjust strategies as needed, and ensure consistency across settings.
- Support students in transitioning between activities and environments, implementing visual supports and structured routines to promote predictability and reduce anxiety.
- Communicate effectively with school staff regarding student's progress, challenges, and strategies for support.
- Supervise students closely during breakfast and /or lunch and/or recess and/or specials
- Performs other duties as assigned by classroom teacher or appropriate administrator.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in behavior management, autism support, and the Montessori philosophy.
