Special Education Autism Resource Teacher for RISE (Reaching Independence Through Structured Environments)

Unit I Salary Scale, 10 months, 7.5 hours per day
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A minimum of three years of successful teaching or related experience with children with special needs.
  • Knowledge of the Maryland and College Career-Ready Standards (MCCRS).
  • Understanding of the teaching/learning/assessment process.
  • Eligibility for Maryland State Department of Education teacher certification in Special Education, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene license for Speech Pathology, Master level licensed clinical social worker (LCSW-C), or Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) .
  • Successful experience working with/facilitating groups.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organization and mediation skills.
  • Knowledge of current trends and legal issues in providing educational services to children with autism spectrum disorder and other disorders.
  • Experience with students that exhibit challenging behaviors.
  • Effective Experience/training with "best practices" in the field of Autism in relation to services, methodologies, communication systems, data collection, etc.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Skill proficiency with computers and use of various software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodations.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience with Early Childhood education.
  • Interagency planning experience.
  • Special Education teaching or related experience with students with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
  • Experience in working in a contained Special Education classroom setting as well as in the inclusive environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide instruction and case management services for students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate and align instruction across all teachers and staff while ensuring all needs and services for students are being implemented.
  • Implement "best practice" strategies in the classroom while recognizing individual learning styles and needs.
  • Ensure the provision of accommodations and modifications to materials and instruction to meet students' needs.
  • Implement, review and follow-through on behavioral strategies and interventions that are driven by the student's IEP and/or Behavior Intervention Plan.
  • Utilize the MCCRS in planning for instruction and in the development of the IEP.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, teachers, staff and team members.
  • Develop, implement and deliver professional development relative to Special Education and autism spectrum disorders.
  • Implement and monitor progress on parent training sessions throughout the school year.
  • Demonstrate courteous and professional treatment of all students, parents, and employees of Washington County Public Schools.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, Special Education content teachers, and related service providers to develop, write, and ensure implementation of IEPs for students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with building administrators to align Special Education staffing with the needs of students with disabilities as stated on their IEPs.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork, i.e., Medical Assistance billing, SSIS, testing accommodations, etc.
  • Assist Life Skills case managers and E.D. case managers with case management procedures as needed.
  • Conduct educational assessments of students to determine 1) disabilities in reading and/or mathematics and 2) continued eligibility to receive Special Education and related services.
  • Ensure all case management responsibilities are completed, verified, and documented, including progress reporting.
  • Communicate with parents and attend to student emergencies, as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling Special Education students
  • Ensure that IEPs are fully implemented within the students' least restrictive environment.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to students' IEPs.
  • Communicate with teachers, administrators, drop-out prevention specialists, social workers, and counselors as needed to ensure students' achievement.
  • Pre-teach, teach, and re-teach skills needed for students to improve achievement in mathematics.
  • Monitor and ensure progress of Special Education students on IEP goals and objectives.
  • Report progress on IEP goals at each grading period.
  • Collaborate with Special Education case manager and general education teachers in developing IEP goals and objectives, Functional Behavior Assessments, and Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Assist general educators in collecting and analyzing information from formative assessments and IEPs to guide daily instruction within the appropriate educational setting.
  • Match interventions to the students' needs as stated in the IEPs.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Special Education, Supervisors of Special Education, and building administrators.

  • Required prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer and other office equipment.

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Ability to travel district-wide and state-wide if needed.
  • Ability to work prolonged and irregular hours.
