Job description

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  1. Provides specialized instruction to pupils to meet the goals and objectives as developed in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  2. Assess individual students to determine present levels of performance.
  3. Serves as a member of the Individualized Education Program Team.
  4. Implements the IEP with appropriate lesson plans, materials, and classroom strategies, and prepares Individualized Education Programs.
  5. Uses effective behavior management techniques to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  6. Prepares schedules and timelines to implement classroom activities.
  7. Observes and makes ongoing evaluation of pupil's academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports, and communicates with parents on the individual pupil's progress.
  8. Cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, behavior and learning problems.
  9. Appropriately mainstreams children into integrated settings for maximum interaction with peers.
  10. Creates a functional and attractive environment for learning through room displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  11. Plans and coordinates the work of aides in order to maximize student learning.
  12. Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice educational activities.
  13. Meets and confers with parents, staff members and coordinator as to children's needs.
  14. Assists when necessary in toileting, feeding, dressing, loading in and out of the bus.
  15. Adjusts equipment, braces and furniture as the need arises.
  16. Takes inventories and prepares orders for classroom aids and equipment.
  17. Completes required educational forms.
  18. Works collaboratively with Special Education Coordinator and other IEP team members to foster student learning.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned by Special Education Coordinator or site Principal.
 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 
Personal Qualifications:
 
  1. Interest and understanding of students with exceptionalities.
  2. Willingness to stay abreast of current trends, innovations, and practices of education of exceptional students.
  3. Demonstrates personal characteristics which are conducive to good communication and self-management.
  4. Must possess a private vehicle, valid California driver's license and carry current automobile insurance with at least minimum coverage for public liability and property damage.
 

Professional Qualifications:

 
  1. Ability to work effectively with children, parents, and staff.
  2. Sensitive to each child's needs.
  3. Performs duties and responsibilities with a high degree of professional integrity.
 

Education:

 
  1. Holds a Bachelor's degree.
  2. Master's degree is preferred.
  3. Possesses a California credential or authorization in Early Childhood Special Education.
 

Experience:

 
  1. Successful teaching experience or training in planning to implement IEPs for children who may have some or all of the following conditions: severe to profound mental retardation, non-ambulatory, in need of feeding training, in need of toilet training, seizure disorders, severe deficits in fine and gross motor functioning, speech and language deficity, and autism.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, materials, and strategies for educating students with severe disabling conditions.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with support services, including an instructional aide, physical and occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist, adaptive physical education specialist, psychologist, and school nurse.
 

SALARY AND TERMS OF SERVICE:
Salary according to teacher's placement on the Certificated Salary Schedule. Placement on the schedule is dependent upon qualifications/previous experience. Prepaid family dental, medical, and vision insurance plans; life insurance plan for employee only.
