The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is seeking a limited-term Archivist I to facilitate description and access to the GRI’s unique materials. The focus of this position will be to enhance description of the Photo Archive, a collection of over 2 million documentary photographs of western art from antiquity through the early 20th century, organized by chronology, medium and culture. This is a fifteen-month limited-term position.
Reporting to the Special Collections Archivist III who will oversee the project, the Archivist I will concentrate on issues of arrangement and discovery in several large painting and drawing collections, especially Italian and French. They will provide folder-level description of sections of the archive, finalize DACS-compliant finding aids for those sections, and update MARC records in the repository’s catalog and in OCLC. A substantial element of the position involves identifying works of art depicted in the photographs. The archivist should be able to visually classify paintings and drawings by national/regional schools and chronological periods.
