Education Support Specialist

What is this job? The Educational Support Specialist effectively works as a member of an interdisciplinary team to ensure that day-to-day supervision of students both in the residence as well as the school setting is consistent with agency standards. Assumes the role of the Educational Coordinator for WV programs in their absence. This position is integral to supporting the unique needs of each student and identifying proper solutions when students encounter challenges.

What is the Caminos Program?

You would be helping children who have recently migrated to the United States and are seeking opportunities for reunification with family as well as the chance to pursue their education and legal immigration cases. What does this job do specifically?

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Model and act in accordance with BCC’s core values.
  • Demonstrate and practice trauma informed leadership.
  • Demonstrate and practice BCC’s leadership mindset, “Choose kindness. Solve problems and learn together. Make it happen.”
  • Responsible for the coordination of systems related to educational intake and discharge requirements, ensuring assessments, data reports and documentation are completed within the regulatory timeframes.
  • Ensures documentation of student progress occurs in accordance with program, State and Federal expectations, completing academic reports and progress notes to ensure that youth progress is accurately recorded for future educational placement.
  • Collaborates with program leadership to coordinate staffing, transportation and communication related to youth medical appointments.
  • Responsible for ensuring direct supervision of youth is maintained at all times, meeting State and Federal ratio requirements as well as line of sight and sound supervision standards.
  • Maintains an active presence in the Caminos classrooms, encouraging youth in their academic pursuits and providing individualized support based on the needs of the youth.
  • Delivers coaching and mentoring for ESS personnel, offering opportunities to demonstrate and role model Trauma Informed Practices in the living unit, classroom, and other areas of service delivery.
  • Provides direct mealtime supervision to ensure youth are properly supervised, provided a balanced meal and that dining procedures are consistently followed.
  • Provides effective communication across departments and programs to ensure consistency of expectations, as well as works effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with children/youth, colleagues, consultants and community agencies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the value of cultural diversity, including the ability to develop systems and practices that are inclusive of diverse staff members and responsive to the cultural needs of the client population served.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and familiarity with both Board of Child Care and Office of Refugee Resettlement Policy and Procedures relating to the care and supervision of Unaccompanied Children. This includes knowledge of legal background and authority governing the practice as related to working with Unaccompanied Children.
  • Establish relationships with children and adolescents on a group and individual basis, gaining their trust & confidence.
  • Serves as the liaison between other departments and ESS team.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Not eligible for flex schedule. Essential during inclement weather.

When school is not in session, will be assigned to work in a unit; hours will be determined by unit supervisor, based on agency needs.

Eligibility

Required Education and Experience:

• High School diploma with a minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth.

• Ability to speak, read and write Spanish


Preferred Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Human Services or related field.
