Job Summary:

The South Carolina and Georgia Greenway Manager is a full-time position that carries multi-state  responsibilities for all aspects of greenway development, partnerships, volunteer engagement, and greenway advocacy tasks in Georgia and South Carolina. The South Carolina and Georgia Greenway Manager works under the direction of the National Greenway Director in coordination with other East Coast Greenway Alliance (ECGA) staff.

 

This position will implement programs that support the ECGA Strategic Plan and specific strategies and goals in the region. The right candidate will grow, support, and empower our volunteers in the state and must be able to travel frequently within the region for meetings, events, and site visits. Work will entail planning, design, grant writing, relationship building, coalition building, data collection, field investigations, and performing technical and GIS data analysis. Responsibilities Include:

  • Complete and monitor East Coast Greenway (ECG) signage throughout the states and update the ECGA online trip planner (map.greenway.org). Work to move a maximum amount of the on-road portions off-road (including designating trail as official ECG) and make remaining on-road sections as safe and bicycle/pedestrian-friendly as feasible.
  • Keep the GIS data-reporting system up-to-date and create reports as requested (at least quarterly). 
  • Assist our volunteer State Committees and other volunteers within the state.
  • Build/maintain a strong network of strategic alliances with public agencies, elected officials, and organizations in each state to continue strong Greenway progress. Keep contacts updated in organization CRM. 
  • Communicate state information in coordination with other staff for the ECGA website, newsletters, and social media. Engage local media with support from the ECGA communications team.
  • Provide timely information to assist with overall fundraising efforts in the region.

  • Demonstrated leadership in implementing greenway projects that promote transportation equity.  
  • Track record engaging and motivating volunteers.
  • Three years or more project management and/or program experience in a relevant area such as greenway development, environmental policy, public health, or community organizing.
  • Education and work experience: Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, transportation planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture and/or combination of relevant professional experience.  
  • Nonprofit experience is preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping software and willingness to learn. Experience with GIS mapping is preferred. The alliance utilizes QGIS for mapping and data management; maintaining the route map in QGIS for the region is a requirement of the role.
  • Strong computer skills: Proficient in Google platforms. Can easily create Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Further Detail:

  1. Planning
  1. Develop detailed progress reports on the ECG in the region in collaboration with State Committee leaders, partner agencies, and organizations.  
  2. Work with ECGA staff and State Committees to plan logistics for ECG progress in the region, identifying, and finding solutions for key gaps and opportunities.
 
  1. Greenway Implementation
  1. Become familiar in detail with the route throughout the regional corridor.
  2. Advocate for the funding necessary to plan, design, and build the Greenway. 
  3. Work directly with State Committees and agency and non-profit partners to advance implementation of ECG plans. Network, engage, and educate local to federal stakeholders.  
  4. Manage the trail designation process within the region.
  5. Coordinate signage program within the state including:
  • Work with state DOTs, local municipalities, parks, and volunteers to implement full signage of the current East Coast Greenway travel route throughout the region.
  1. Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with other bike/ped organizations, community groups, public and private agencies, and trail advocates to further Greenway priorities.
  2. Organize ECGA state meetings, workshops, and training sessions. 
  3. Serve as point of contact for trail managers/developers/advocates regarding ECG questions.  Help provide assistance or direct inquiries to appropriate sources.
  4. Monitor designated trail segments to ensure they continue to meet our standards.
  5. Get ECG included in state and local plans, official reports, and on official maps.
  6. Organize state and regional advocacy to secure trail development funding.
 
  1. Building Public Support
  1. Build and support strong volunteer engagement including organizing State’s Committee meetings.
  2. Organize and participate in events throughout the state throughout the year: including bike rides, walks, advocacy days, and community events.
 
  1. Tracking Progress
  1. Present reports on ECGA progress for the region internally and externally.
  2. Maintain GIS database for all current and envisioned routing in each state. 
     
  1. Communications
  1. Media
    1. Working in coordination with the ECGA communications team, respond  to or help direct to the most appropriate party inquiries by the public, our partners, and media related to the ECG.
    2. Provide state and regional news & stories for e-news, website, & social media.
       
  1. Promotion
  1. Represent ECGA at relevant meetings and events.
 
  1. Administrative
  1. Maintain files, a database of contacts, and email groups as needed for your communication within the region.
 
  1. Fundraising
  1. Assist the development team as directed to increase regional resources from ECGA membership, donors, foundations, corporate support, and successful events.
     
  1. Assist with other tasks as assigned.
 

Salary and Benefits: 

This is a full-time position with salary commensurate with experience. Hiring range: $55,000-70,000. This is a remote position based along the route in South Carolina or Georgia. The manager must have reliable access to transportation to be able to regularly and efficiently travel throughout the region for meetings and events.
