Pay Philosophy
The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
Description
Within the West region, this role is responsible for driving underwriting execution, developing a market leading field underwriting team, creating consistency and alignment across Middle Market (MM) segments, and ensuring Middle Market is easy to do business with. This role is accountable for building the production underwriting strategy across all segment underwriters and directly managing the multi-industry underwriters within the east region. This role reports to the General Manager of the Middle Market Field organization. The West region Multi-Industry Underwriting Managers will report directly to this role and the dedicated industry vertical (Construction, Energy, Public Entity, and Private Equity) Underwriting Managers across Middle Market will also have accountability into this role.
Responsibilities:
Underwriting execution
  • Responsible for executing the Middle Market strategy for the West region across all segments and industries in MM in partnership with the dedicated industry leaders.
  • In partnership with the Office of the Middle Market CUO, ensures we are writing the right risks and executing on the broader strategy across the region with focus on integrity, profit & growth.
  • Creates and leads a team of teams within the region made up of the multi-industry and dedicated industry managers in the region.
  • Facilitates knowledge sharing drives consistency across segments within the region.
  • In collaboration with the office of the MM CUO, executes the underwriting strategy in alignment with GRS's profitability and growth objectives.
  • Oversee efforts to maintain underwriting discipline and profitably grow the portfolio through segmentation, product diversification, and development of new products and services to meet the needs of specific industry and market segments.

Talent strategy & deployment
  • In partnership with dedicated industry leaders, responsible for ensuring we have the right talent in the right places with the right relationships within the region.
  • Responsible for attracting, developing, engaging and retaining talent within the region to achieve results

Market engagement
  • Build and deepen relationships with key regional and large brokers by being visible and engaging in the regional marketplace.
  • Ensure Middle Market shows up cohesively across all segments (Public Entity, Energy, Construction, Multi-Industry, Private Equity) in the east region.
  • Effectively uses the full influence of all segments in Middle Market to drive profit and production in the region.
  • Is visible and engages in the marketplace. Presents at industry events and engage with key clients and brokers to convey the Company's value proposition.
  • Drives partnership across Middle Market with GRS Field Operations / Distribution internally and externally.

Inclusive Leadership
  • Leads and manages a high performing underwriting organization to deliver on the business strategy.
  • Motivates and engages the region with clear messaging regarding the strategy and expectations
  • Collaborates with other Middle Market leaders, the office of underwriting, operations, actuarial, claims, finance and field operations to improve decision-making and drive results.
  • Promotes a culture that empowers the team to have an impact through collaboration and innovation.
  • Leads effectively through change and takes action to improve the underwriting experience and make the operating model successful.

Qualifications
Technical skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of commercial property and casualty, including competitive conditions
  • Insurance operations; finance and actuarial concepts; regulatory environment; reinsurance
  • Account management
  • Underwriting
  • Loss control
  • Producer management; and industry trends.

Professional/General Business skills:

  • Underwriting background (preferred)
  • Deep knowledge of Middle Market and strong relationships in market
  • 12 or more years of relevant experience including operations, external relationships and people leadership.
