About the Role:

Aquila is seeking a Software Engineer (UI/UX Designerto join our team in supporting one of the country’s premier defense research organizations. The group creates and transitions advanced technologies for ensuring the security and resiliency of next-generation mission-critical systems. The group's research and development in this area focus on a wide range of systems from drones and satellites, to handheld devices and miniature sensors, to high­ performance secure cloud computing, to many others. The group comprises of computer scientists; software, hardware, and electrical engineers; cryptographers; system analysts; and security architects, all of whom share a common passion for helping solve some of the hardest technical problems relevant to national security. The group pursues innovative, high-impact, practical research in small focused teams, and it succeeds by participating in all R&D phases, including problem analysis and innovative solution design, system architecture, rapid prototyping, field testing, and ultimately, transfer of the technology to Department of Defense and Intelligence Community users, sponsors, and industry.

What You'll Do:

This role is for a Software Engineer (UI/UX Designer and Engineer) responsible for designing, implementing, and testing usable interfaces for web-based applications to support research and development (R&D) programs at the facility. Engineers in this group work closely with software architects, system administrators, and researchers. The Software Engineer will design and implement software to present a usable interface to operators for national security missions. They will also create visual elements to enable control and status of back-end data manipulation and cryptographic operations for prototyping and demonstration purposes. Also, the candidate will test software in multiple use-case scenarios to ensure the usability of the application and engage with stakeholders to demonstrate the software and gain feedback to apply for further refinements. Extensive experience in the development of web-based applications or similar UI/UX software.

There are a few requirements for the position:

  • Must be a U.S Citizen (Green Cards / Visas do not qualify)
  • Willingness to undergo a comprehensive background investigation and maintain a personal security clearance. (Aquila would sponsor you for the security clearance.)
  • Reside within 100 miles of Lexington, Massachusetts.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 3 years of Operating System (OS) platforms (Linux, Mac, Windows)
  • 3 years of UI/UX Designer
  • 3 years of Software Documentation
  • 3 years of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and AJAX
  • 3 years of JavaScript Development
  • 1 year of Object Oriented Software Design and Development
  • 3 years of Software Design/Development

Working Knowledge of the Following:

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other related degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience in user interface design and implementation in web-based applications (e.g., HTML/CSS/Javascript, React, Angular)
  • Familiarity with communication and networking protocols, secure programming, and the MS Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Must be an enthusiastic, innovative, and motivated self-starter able to work independently, or with a team, to achieve program goals
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills

And These Skills are a Bonus:

  • Proficiency in at least one common programming language (e.g. Python, C++, Rust)
  • Knowledge of and development experience with user interfaces for national security systems application software
  • Database programming experience (understanding of database security concerns will be considered a plus)
  • Familiarity with mobile device application development for iOS and/or Android systems

Location: Lexington, Massachusetts. 

Work Schedule: Hybrid — Individual works from home or off-site for a portion of their schedule. Must be within commutable distance of Lexington, Massachusetts. 
Clearance: Candidates with active secret clearance preferred. Interim secret sufficient to start.

Travel: Domestic Travel is estimated to be 1-2 days on a quarterly basis to the facility's field or sponsor sites.
