Description
Softball umpires are in charge of officiating the game, including starting and ending the game, enforcing the rules of the game, making judgment calls on plays, and handling the disciplinary actions between players, coaches, and fans.
Examples of Duties
- Officiate and control games, events and competitions in a confident, appropriate manner.
- Ensure all participants understand and comply with game rules and assess penalties when needed.
- Make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules.
- Keep track of event start times; start or stop play as necessary.
- Make sure the teams have the appropriate equipment and inspect both players and equipment for any issues.
- Settle any claims or disagreements about infractions.
- Keep and update game records including, but not limited to, incident/accident reports, timecards, and when you are scheduled to umpire.
- Maintain positive public relations, and enthusiastically support the New Hope Parks and Recreation Department.

Preferred Requirements
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license or the ability to obtain one upon hire.
- Current Concussion certification.
- Good vision: Umpires must be able to view violations and infractions accurately during gameplay.
- Interpersonal/communication skills: Umpires must be able to communicate the rules clearly in a non-confrontational manner and settle disputes among players and coaches.
- Decision-making ability: Officials must often make quick decisions on infractions and other calls.
- Solid character: Maintain strong character and unquestionable integrity.
- Teamwork: Officials must be able to work with others to come to a mutual decision on rulings and contribute to the development and educational experience of the team members.
- Umpires must put in the effort to understand the rules and how to apply them within the flow of the game.
- Umpires must have extensive knowledge of the sport and the rules of the game to perform their job successfully.
- New officials usually work lower level games, perhaps Men’s E league or Co-Rec as opposed to Men’s D, as they work their way up and gain experience.
- Must attend USSSA seminar training, take test and become certified
- Be at least 18 years of age
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, and observing general surroundings and activities; work requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location.
