Sequoias Community College District is seeking candidates who are qualified and equity-minded to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Sociology Department beginning August 2024.

Job Duties

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching face-to-face sections of Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and Marriage and Family Life. Possible additional offerings depend on the expertise and preference of the successful candidate, as well as department need, and may include courses in Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Deviance, and Self and Society.
  • Assignments may include evening hours and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare.
  • Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is highly encouraged.
  • Maintenance of office hours, full participation in departmental/division responsibilities, and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity, justice, anti-racism, and appreciation for diversity throughout the college.
Qualifications

The candidate must meet the following criteria.

  • Master’s in sociology
OR
  • Bachelor’s in sociology AND Master’s in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work or psychology
OR
  • The equivalent
AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students which pursuant to Title 5 §53022 is a core competency and job requirement.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proven capacity to successfully teach in-person Sociology courses (particularly Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and Marriage and Families) with an intersectional, anti-racist, and culturally responsive approach to students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
  • Use of equity-minded and culturally responsive pedagogical classroom practices to increase student knowledge and success.
  • Ability to create dynamic student-centered learning environments that value student knowledge, instructor-student interaction, student mentorship, and student success.
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students and community members to enhance student, departmental, and institutional success.
  • Enthusiasm to develop and expand the Sociology program at College of the Sequoias through a variety of tasks, such as: assisting in Program Review, developing new courses, coordinating annual trips to CSA, and/or advising the sociology club.
  • Experience with creating, implementing, and assessing effective: student learning outcomes; course and program-level outcomes; presentations or lectures; assignments and assessments; rubrics; and student or campus-wide events.
  • Ongoing professional development, specifically that which expands diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts.
  • Knowledge of various campus resources for students such as EOPS/CARE, NextUp, Dream Resource Centers, Access/Disability Centers, CalWORKs, and more.

  • Equivalency documents (if necessary).
  • Two (2) recent letters of recommendation addressing pertinent experience or equivalent competencies.
