The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Child and Family Services Division in Kalispell.


The Social Service Technician provides assistance to the Child Protection Specialist (CPS) in delivering family-centered services within a trauma-informed system to assure safety, permanency, and well-being for children who are at risk of or have been subjected to child maltreatment. Responsibilities of this position include, but not limited to: providing oral and written reports to the CPS regarding contacts with children and families in an effort to achieve positive outcomes, schedules and coordinates appointments and meetings, supervises and documents parent/child interactions during visitations, assists in meeting documentation requirements to assure compliance with statutory and policy requirements regarding safety, permanency, and well-being.

Qualifications for this Career Opportunity


  • Basic knowledge of child development.
  • Ability to develop respectful, constructive, and cooperative working relationships with others and engage families and children.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including using spreadsheet, word processing, database, email, internet, and other computer programs.
  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • High school diploma or the equivalent.
    • Two years of Social Services work experience, or other directly-related work experience, working with children and families in difficult and sometimes volatile situations.
    • Other combinations of related education and work experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • Experience working with tribal government entities and/or other organizations of native peoples is highly preferred.

Additional Information


This position may be eligible for partial telework within the state of Montana. Specific conditions will be provided by the supervisor and must adhere to state policy.


This position may be eligible for a statutory $1.50 an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2024.


This position is open until filled with frequent screening of applicants.

Training Assignment: This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.
