General Information:

Social Media Assistants work closely with the Social Media Manager on the day-to-day Social Media creation and management of the JMU Social Media accounts. As a Social Media Assistant, you’ll play an important role in the strategy, voice, and management of the JMU Social Media accounts. Social Media Assistants gain hands on and high level experience working on a brand Social Media account and will have access to continuing education opportunities.
This position is for the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters. This position will work 10 hours a week with a mix of office hours and event coverage including Move-In and Weeks of Welcome.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Research and develop student-oriented Social Media strategies based on emerging trends in HigherEd social and the broader Social Media space
Regularly update and review Social Media insights
Organize and manage Instagram takeovers and “This Week at JMU” with student and professional affiliates across campus
Assist with other miscellaneous Social Media responsibilities, including but not limited to: copywriting, post curation, writing alt-text for images, managing the Social Media calendar, comment moderation, etc.
Create engaging content and event coverage for JMU’ Instagram stories and on Threads
Collaborate with other JMU Communications interns on short-form video content
Collaborate with campus partners on Social Media campaigns and initiatives
Serve as a JMU Social Media ambassador


Qualifications:

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong understanding of Social Media platforms and best practices Strong organizational skills
Interest in Social Media content creation and management
Ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with students, faculty and staff
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines


Conditions of Employment:

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
