Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education, Office of School Nutrition, is seeking a qualified individual under broad direction provides technical assistance to local education authorities in the specialty area of foodservice operations and culinary applications for school nutrition programs and professionals. Works under the Training, Grants, and Program Improvement Supervisor and works collaboratively with SNP local wellness policy specialist and SNP farm to school specialist. Plans and organizes assigned activities to meet the objectives of the School Nutrition Program office. Attends and participates in national and federal level meetings. Statewide travel required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition in the K12 school environment.
- Knowledge of institutional food service.
- Excellent skills in written and oral communication.
- Organizational management and communication skills.
- Skills in planning, developing, and presenting training programs; computer skills in data base management, spread sheet applications, word processing, presentation software, nutrient analysis, internet, and web-based systems.
- Skills in researching, collecting, organizing, and managing data: skills in report writing, and delivering technical assistance and training to school divisions.
- Experience in developing and managing standardized recipes, foodservice equipment, and professional kitchen operations.
- Ability to develop, implement, train, and evaluate program effectiveness and develop training and technical assistance materials to focus on the core program areas of: quality nutritional recipes and menus, utilization of farm to school initiatives, and other specific areas as appropriate.
- Demonstrated knowledge of culinary techniques and practices.
Additional Considerations
Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in culinary arts, nutrition, hospitality or a related field and professional-level experience in school nutrition, education, or other federal related programs. Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint).
Desirable:
Culinary certification.
Experience teaching students and/or adult learners.
Experience with menu and standardized recipe development for federal school nutrition programs.
Preferred professional-level experience in school nutrition programs
