Small Business Counselor - NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center

Division: Small Business Development Center (SBDC)

Category/Level: PSS/5

Basic Function: Serve North Iowa entrepreneurs and business owners by offering individualized business counseling services focusing on identifying management, strategic growth, and technical assistance needs. Additionally, provide guidance on relevant educational programs, workshops, and training aimed at addressing business solutions within a nine-county area. 

Salary & Benefits: $46,500 - $56,000 based on experience. Benefits package includes Blue Cross/Blue Shield health insurance; eye care, dental, life and disability insurance; paid vacation and sick time; a choice of IPERS or TIAA retirement plans and a variety of additional optional benefits. 

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a business-related field is required, with a preference for candidates holding a Master's degree.
Candidates should demonstrate substantial experience in business ownership and management or direct involvement in counseling or consulting business owners. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential, along with credible business consulting abilities. The ideal candidate would have previous ownership or management experience in a business or have held full profit and loss (P&L) responsibility for a business unit. Proficiency in financial management and reporting is necessary, and familiarity with various marketing methods and strategies is advantageous.

Responsibilities:
The tasks outlined below encompass the primary responsibilities of the position; additional tasks relevant to the nature of the work may be assigned by management as needed.
1. Deliver free and confidential specialized business counseling tailored to both startup and existing Small Businesses throughout North Central Iowa. Support clients as required, which may include occasional nights and weekends.
2. Work directly and collaborate with the NIACC JPEC in support of entrepreneurial education and community outreach, assisting in delivering a comprehensive, fully integrated model of business development services.
3. Ensure confidentiality of client services and records, performing all administrative tasks such as entering client information in the SBDC database and promptly submitting required documentation to the SBDC State Office or Regional Director.
4. Collaborate with and assist entrepreneurs in developing business models, crafting business plans, creating financial documents, marketing strategies, and mapping a funding plan.
5. Collaborate with the SBDC Director and Pappajohn Center staff to identify training and educational needs for Small Businesses and use this information to design and deliver training workshops and Small Business focused events.
6. Work independently, addressing client needs with industry expertise, practical knowledge, and best practices while embracing, valuing, and supporting individuals of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, fostering an inclusive environment.
7. Build and maintain a business and community resources network, connecting clients with relevant resources as needed while representing the SBDC, NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, and the College in a highly professional manner.
8. Advance the mission and goals of the statewide SBDC program by surpassing minimum goals set by the state's lead center and working cooperatively with the Regional Director and other regional centers.
9. Contribute to the strategic priorities and mission of the Iowa SBDC network and the NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.
10. Fulfill other related work duties as assigned.
