Job description

Purpose and Scope: 

Gunsmith/Small Arms Repair makes initial diagnosis and locates mechanical deficiencies and malfunctions of rifles, pistols, shotguns, and other complete Small Arms of similar complexity; and subassemblies of larger more complicated weapons such as medium and heavy machine guns, and grenade launchers. Disassembles and assembles subassemblies and other components; examines for defects, mechanical misalignment, and malfunctions. Replaces barrels, bolts, trigger mechanisms, and various springs etc.  Uses hand and machine tools, precision gages, and test equipment under minimal supervision.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform detailed assembly and disassembly of U.S military Small Arms weapons including Small Arms inspection, maintenance, and minor repairs and part replacement.

  • Performs publication and catalogue updates, tool and capital equipment maintenance, calibration control, weapons cleaning, and organizational level weapons maintenance.

  • Repair and service U.S military firearms, weapons and accessories and has necessary knowledge of munitions and ballistics to accomplish assigned tasks.

  • Possesses knowledge of the tools (i.e., hammers, punches, files, stones, etc.) and gauges needed to perform assigned duties, has limited knowledge in the operation of gun-smiting machinery such as bore scopes, calipers, drills, rotary machines, surface grinders, etc., as well as limited knowledge of tooling used with those machines.

  • Has knowledge of basic shop safety procedures needed to work in a Small Arms environment, performs support functions for the shop, to include non-destructive testing and dye penetrants.

  • Performs all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. 

  • Requires knowledge in the use of hand tools, machine tools, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. 

  • Qualification for this position usually requires attendance at a formal 1–2 year accredited in-house gun-smithing course, or equivalent work and/or military experience.

  • Training and related experience in the field consistent with the requirements set forth in the contract/delivery order. 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions.  The employee may be exposed to situations where risk of electrical shock and vibration exist. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
