Job description


TheAnaheim Convention Center is owned and operated by the City of Anaheim and it is our mission to provide unparalleled service in a world class venue as we hosts over 200 events each year, welcoming approximately 1.1 million visitors annually. We are seeking a Skilled Crafts Worker IIto join in our mission by performing a variety of trades in areas such as carpentry, construction, painting and plumbing. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and skills in multiple areas of construction trades and will perform a broad range of complex tasks and duties in each area.

Candidates must possess journey level experience in two (2) or more of the following skilled construction trades: cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and welding, plumbing, painting, and sign making. Competitive candidates will possess journey level experience specifically in: carpentry, plumbing/construction work, metal fabrication and machining, and/or painting that include coaching and directing the activities of less experienced workers.
Skilled Crafts Workers typically work one (1) of two (2) schedules: Day Shift (7:00am - 3:30pm) and Evening Shift (3:00pm - 11:30pm), with a current shift rotation every two (2) months. Depending on the Department's need, incumbents will be required to work evening, weekends, and holidays. Overtime opportunities may be available on an event needed basis.
The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Perform a variety of skilled labor in one or more assignment, including but not limited to, cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and machining/welding, plumbing, painting/finishing, and sign making; perform technical maintenance, repair, installation, alteration, and construction activities.
Read and interpret technical manuals, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
Accurately analyze and communicate conditions of job assignments.
Maintain tool shop, tools, equipment, and supplies.
Respond to customer complaints and inquiries regarding City facilities and buildings.
Observe safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment.
Lift and move heavy objects.
Use of purchasing card to order or buy material as needed.
Duties when performing the following trades:

Carpentry:
  • Build, install, remove, and repair walls, cabinets, shelves, stanchions, A-frames, barricades, shoring, doors, and doorways, fences, bulletins and blackboards.
  • Frame set, install and repairs windows; cut and frame access holes.
  • Install and/or repair sinks, countertops, finishing trims, dropped ceilings, ceiling tile and paneling. Install and/or repair all flooring types and tiling.
  • Install and/or repair roofing systems and perform temporary patching
  • Perform layout and rough framing work, on wood and steel stud buildings,
  • Install and/or repair drywall.
  • Repair and install locks, door closers, panic hardware, and auto assist openers
  • Repair and maintain a variety of office furniture.
Cabinetry:
  • Consults with requestors and plans work.
  • Estimates costs, orders hardware, wood and supplies.
  • Designs furniture, cabinets and structures from rough sketches.
  • Constructs cabinets and structures.
  • Uses and maintains saws, lathe, shaper, planer and glue machines.
  • Makes molding and picture frames and builds special and promotional projects.
  • Dovetails joints and hand carves.
  • Uses Plexiglas, fiberglass and Formica.
  • Acts as a liaison with contractors.
Plumbing:
  • Repair mechanical equipment such as hydraulic hoists, gasoline delivery pumps, filter systems and air-compressor lines.
  • Install and/or repair water lines, pipes, hot water tanks and heaters, faucet and flush valves, pressure relief valves, pumps, lavatories, gas lines, air-lines, and fire lines.
  • Inspect and maintain fire sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.
  • Repair plumbing stoppages and broken pipes.
  • Perform miscellaneous repairs to cement work, tiles, roofs, and floors.
  • Perform all types of pipe and tube joinery, which includes but is not limited to; soldering, brazing, mechanically connected, solvent welded, welded or mechanically restrained.
Metal Fabrication and Welding:
  • Perform oxy/fuel, plasma gas cutting used in metal fabrication, fitting, joining, grinding and drilling Design, detail, layout, fabricate, and assemble structural steel structures.
  • Design, detail, layout, fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal components.
  • Weld and cut ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys using the appropriate processed which includes but is not limited to GMAW, GTAW, SMAW and FCAW
  • Precision machine, bore, turn, drill, mill, single point tread, grind materials to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) finish standards.
Locksmith:
  • Makes keys, repairs and installs locks for all city facilities.
  • Cuts keys from blanks and sets pins to key locks.
  • Maintains records of all keys and locks in all city facilities.
  • Checks records to prevent cross-keying.
  • Performs routine maintenance on locks and door closers.
  • Makes codes from bidding lists for rekeying.
  • Rekeys lock cylinders, padlocks, and mortise locks to code.
  • Repairs and installs mortise locks and deadbolts, padlocks and furniture locks.
  • Changes combinations of safes.
Painting and Finishing:
  • Clean, prime, sandblast, repair, prep and paint all types of finished surfaces.
  • Strip, prep, and hang wall coverings.
  • Dye upholstery.
  • Strip, refinish furniture, wood, cabinetry, all flooring types, and concrete finishes.
  • Match colors and sheens and select paint type (water-base, oil-base, or vinyl) as appropriate to the existing finish or finish schedule.
  • Safely operate commercial sandblasting equipment removing graffiti in public places.
  • Operate electrostatic spray painting equipment.
  • Operate atomizing spray equipment.
Sign Making:
  • Installs new signs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on signs; removes, cleans, paints and replaces.
  • Receives copy and lays out work.
  • Letters free hand.
  • Paints signs on structures and vehicles.
  • Spray paints.
  • Makes stencils and pounce patterns.
  • Lays on gold leaf and shades.
  • Stains picture frames.
  • Mixes paints and matches colors.
  • Makes and lines chalk boards.
  • Repairs fiberglass.
  • Designs signs using computer aided design to measure and calculate letter and logo sizes.
  • Prints out signs or designs on digital printers applying paint backgrounds by brush, spray or roller hand-painting lettering (in traditional sign making).
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Experience: Journey level experience in two (2) or more of the following skilled construction trades: cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and welding, plumbing, painting, and sign making. Competitive candidates will possess journey level experience specifically in: carpentry, plumbing/construction work, metal fabrication and machining, and/or painting that include coaching and directing the activities of less experienced workers.
Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, principles, theories, and standard practices of several maintenance trades as they apply to maintenance and repair of structures, machinery, and equipment; occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices; modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and basic computer software; principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting; safe driving rules and safe work practices; and customer service principles and techniques

Ability to: As assigned, perform a full-range of journey or advanced journey-level duties and tasks in one or more of the following trades: cabinetry, carpentry, locksmith, metal fabrication and machining/welding, plumbing, painting, and sign making; follow both written and verbal instructions; safely operate a variety of hand tools and automated equipment; accurately analyze and communicate conditions of job assignments; read blue prints; read and write in English; perform basic mathematical calculations; perform duties of the job without causing harm to self or others; operate basic computer/PC and programs to include Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS); use tact, initiative, prudence, and judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines; communicate effectively; effectively deal with the public, vendors, contractors and City staff; and maintain positive working relationships.
Depending on assignment, may be required to work evenings, holidays and weekends. May be on call 24/7.
License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License by date of appointment.
