Job description

JOB SUMMARY
Shop Welders are responsible for welding, fabricating, buildup and repairing construction and mining equipment parts. Various levels of knowledge and abilities in the Essential Functions listed below are required and will determine job placement. Specific knowledge needed is dependent upon the individual departments within the company.
Job placement will be based on knowledge, skills, and abilities in accordance with the following guidelines, including prior experience:
Apprentice I: Basic knowledge of welding processes, such as arc welding and oxy fuel cutting.
Experience: 1 year of experience in welding, or possess a strong basic understanding of welding.
Apprentice II: Ability to perform various welding procedures such as weld stick or wire, air arc, plasma arc, etc. Experience: Certificate from a Trade School and/or 2 years of welding experience and can pass a weld test.
Shop: Can troubleshoot and function as a welder with little or no direction and/or assistance. Experience: Minimum four years of previous welding experience 2 of which include heavy equipment experience.
Master: Can troubleshoot and function as a technician with no direction and/or assistance. Must be able to mentor new employees and help train apprentices. Experience: Minimum ten years of previous welding experience 7 of which include heavy equipment experience.
The level of knowledge and performance expectations for all functions and skills will be outlined in greater detail in the Wyoming Machinery Company Employee Development Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Regularly inspects customer's equipment for weld/salvage possibilities by visual inspection, and by the use of testing, diagnostic and measuring equipment to determine problems or malfunctions.
• Weld/salvage parts on frames, engines, hydraulic systems, attachments and related power train systems and do all sorts of custom fabrication.
• Repairs must meet or exceed the expectations of the Weld Shop Supervisor and the customer.
• Write detailed and accurate service reports stating the nature of the job and what has been done.
• Able to work a rotating shift; to include days, evening and nights.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
• Review data from the troubleshooting and inspection process to work up detailed, accurate and cost-effective job estimates.
• Review data from the troubleshooting and inspection process to work up detailed and accurate parts orders.
• Operate mining and construction equipment.
• Clean and service all welding machines and is required to keep a clean work place.
• Work with a positive attitude, spirit of cooperation and mentor co-workers.
• May be required to work out of town occasionally.
• Work overtime as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/ABILITY
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Exposure to construction and mining equipment thru Technical Schools or on-the-job training as a welder or welder's helper at a repair shop, construction company, small contractor or mine.
• Able to read, write, speak and understand English, read and understand parts books, service manuals and fabrication blueprints following ANSI, SAE and/or Caterpillar's blueprinting standards.
• Able to hand sketch drawings legibly enough for other welders to understand and follow. Welding background.
• Able to think and work their way through difficult project or problems.
• Able to diagnose and assess to equipment to fabricate repairs.
• May be required to have a CDL.
• May be required to have current MSHA training.
• Certified AWSSD1.1.
• Able to read and comprehend service literature and basic measuring tools and to know and understand basic arithmetic.
• Able to write meaningful and legible service reports.
• Know and understand various types of systems on a large number of different kinds of equipment, and must be able to use their ability in a meaningful and productive manner during the course of their daily job assignment.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED
Hand wrenches, hammers, impact tools, torque wrenches, screw drivers, basic and advanced measuring tools, overhead hoist, slings and chains, run stick welders, mig welders, tig welders, gas welders, air arc torch welders, tool grinders and numerous other specialized testing, adjusting and measuring equipment. Most often the majority of the above hand tools must be furnished by the employee.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
• Prolonged standing and walking.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Use hands for repetitive fine manipulation, grasping, pushing and pulling.
• Operation and use of power and electrical tools.
• Use feet frequently in repetitive movement.
• Work at heights both inside and outside the facilities, climb ladders, etc.
• Exposure to loud noises, dirt, grime, outside weather conditions, etc.
