Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, hourly, intermittent, and regular (as needed) Ship's First Assistant Engineer positions in the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.
The Ship's First Assistant Engineer assists the Chief Engineer in the safe and efficient operation of OSU operated research vessel machinery, mechanical, and electrical systems.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels, the 199-foot ocean-going Taani and the 54-foot coastal R/V Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include Master of Science (M.S.) and doctorate (Ph.D.) degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and an M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.

Key Responsibilities
60% - Stands watch as the roving engineer at sea and daily duty engineer in ports other than Newport on a rotating basis with other engineers. Assumes responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the engineering plant by performing constant checks on pressures and temperatures, fuel consumption, fluid levels, and conditions of operating machinery ensuring safe, economical, and efficient operation. Operates shipboard equipment such as pumps, winches, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, refrigeration equipment, air compressors, cranes, sewage systems, water makers, piping/tank systems, and boilers.
25% - Assists in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of ship's machinery: hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, and ballast systems; air conditioning; refrigeration; fresh water and saltwater firefighting system; and winches, hoists, blocks, boats/motors, etc. Operates lathe and other precision tools. Assists in change-out of equipment, and in the layout and installation of new equipment. Utilizes current Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
5% - Keeps inventory records. Maintains stocks of supplies and spare parts for ship's machinery, equipment, piping, and mechanical systems, and hydraulic systems. Assists in fueling and watering the vessel and keeps records of fuel, water, and lubricating oil consumption for the Chief Engineer.
5% - Assists in the installation and at-sea repair of mechanical and electrical scientific equipment as requested.
5% - Actively participates in shipboard drills and emergency training, including training ashore. Maintains firefighting and safety equipment. Fights fires and administers First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when required. Other duties as assigned.
What We Require
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
• US Coast Guard Designated Duty Engineer license 4000 HP or better
• STCW endorsements as appropriate for the position
• Ability to obtain a passport
• Meet Coast Guard drug testing requirements
• Ability to speak, read, and write English
What You Will Need
  • Assistant Engineer Limited Oceans license or higher issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

What We Would Like You to Have
  • Three years of experience working on research vessels
  • Ability to weld and cut metal using arc and gas processes.
  • Vessel Security Officer Certificate.
  • Fast Rescue Boat Certificate.
  • K-POS DP Maintenance Training.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigeration Technician Universal Class Certificate.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The employee in this position is required to work on board OSU operated research vessels at sea on research cruises that may last from one day to three weeks or more before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness.
The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work may be required. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs.
In the event of health risks to the working environment while at sea, Ship Operations may need to require quarantine periods and other health & safety requirements before employees join the vessel or begin work at sea to ensure continuity of business operations.
