Essential Functions of the Job:
- Manages Mill Technicians [may or may not be covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement] serving as a coach in meeting goals for safety, production, quality and on-grade up-time
- Responsible for new employee orientation & training, housekeeping, daily tool box talks, AND employee performance management [one-on-ones]
- Works with Employees and Sub-contractor maintenance personnel to perform root cause failure analysis [RCFA] for paper breaks and mechanical failures
- Assesses individual training needs and plans training
- Sets Employee performance expectations and evaluates performance. Works with Employee to correct any performance deficiencies
- Plans employee work schedules to meet production needs
- Works with the Production Manager to plan and execute mill maintenance shut downs
- Maintains equipment through assuring basic care rounds are completed and operator maintenance is performed as required
- Assists Employees in gathering and analyzing data used in continuous improvement efforts
- Champions Employees to continually look for ways of improving processes and communicates needs with managers
- Explains and consistently enforces policies and procedures
- Works with Employees to resolves issues or complaints; communicates Employee concerns with the Production Manager and Human Resources Manager
- Other functions that may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 15 Non-exempt Mill Technicians. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
- Require minimum 10 years plus of paper mill experience
- 10 years or more in heavy manufacturing experience a plus
- Preferred managerial experience
Other skills:
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite and the ability to learn new applications.
- Strong understanding of computerized maintenance management systems such as Maximo.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong mechanical knowledge and aptitude

- Move, lift & carry up to 50 pounds (Occasionally up to 100 pounds)
- Occasionally required to sit, drive heavy machinery such as a bobcat, forklift and clamp truck
- Vision abilities required are close vision and depth perception
- Able to verbally communicate and hearing abilities
Work Environment: The duties of the job are performed either in the Paper Mill at the site of a piece of equipment, yard, or receiving/shipping. The Paper Mill is a large facility, and the employees can work at various locations within the Mill during a shift. Equipment in the Paper Mill can be very large. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee:
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud (80+dB).
- Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to loud, moving mechanical equipment; high precarious places; vapors or corrosive chemicals; hot and cold; blood borne pathogens; and risk of electrical shock.
- Occasionally the employee is exposed to the Mill work environment which can be hot and the noise level is loud
