Job description

Join the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Forensic Science Laboratory in the role of Forensic Technician. In this role you will provide support to one or more laboratory sections. The Forensic Science Laboratory is an ANAB ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing laboratory. The laboratory is dedicated to assisting the Hennepin County criminal justice community by enhancing public safety through the provision of thorough, accurate, and unbiased forensic services.


Effective December 31, 2023, there will be a general salary adjustment of 2.5% to the minimum and maximum of the range.
Location and hours:
This position is located downtown Minneapolis in the Forensic Science Laboratory, 531 Park Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55415. Hours will be Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Based on current requirements, hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will:
  • Perform initial examinations and evaluations of evidence submitted to the forensic laboratory; perform Latent Print and DNA Processing on suitable evidence submitted to the laboratory.
  • Perform technical reviews of casework to ensure both procedural and substantive compliance with applicable standards.
  • Ensure that evidence integrity and proper chain of custody protocols are followed; prepare the laboratory for internal and external quality system audits.
  • Research, recommend, and validate new techniques, procedures, methods, and equipment used in the laboratory.
  • Prepare evidence for court presentation; testify in court regarding laboratory operations.
  • Maintain communication with attorneys, investigators, and other law enforcement personnel regarding case status.
  • Provide information and statistics to assist in the preparation of laboratory budget; prepare written reports and other documents.
  • Complete instrument maintenance and reagent quality control; clean and decontaminate laboratory equipment.
  • Compile and distribute laboratory case records requested through court discovery.
  • Maintain inventory, purchase, and receipt of DNA reagents and supplies.
  • Respond to telephone, email, and counter inquiries from customers.
Need to have:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in criminal justice, forensic science, or a closely related field.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Ability to bend, climb, stretch, and lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
  • Ability to:
    • Apply scientific principles to the examination and testing of physical evidence.
    • Organize, assemble, and write detailed technical reports based on the results of scientific examinations.
    • Work independently with minimal direction and organize a wide variety of tasks and adapt to frequently changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Forensic laboratory policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Judicial system processes pertaining to evidence in criminal court proceedings.
  • Experience:
    • Applying scientific principles to the examination and testing of physical evidence.
    • With Laboratory Information Management Systems.
    • Presenting technical information and opinions to non-technical audiences in a clear, concise, and understandable manner.
    • Examining physical evidence using analytical instruments and forensic science techniques.
    • Managing or using an electronic record management system (e.g. laboratory information management system, document compliance software, etc.).
    • Working for an accredited forensic laboratory.
    • Working with confidential and/or sensitive information.
