Under general supervision, serves as a uniformed sworn officer performing a variety of law enforcement and crime prevention services in the unincorporated areas of the county; performs related duties as assigned.

This is the entry level in the Sheriff’s Department classification series. Positions in this classification do not supervise other individuals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Patrol
Patrols suburban and rural areas of Tom Green County in a department vehicle and enforces state and local laws.

Identifies and stops traffic violators; radios dispatcher to verify driver’s license/vehicle registration information; issues tickets and warnings to vehicle operator and passengers, as appropriate.

Conducts preliminary investigations of accidents and crime scenes; interviews witnesses; gathers evidence and takes statements.

Conducts field sobriety tests and arrests offenders; arrests individuals with outstanding warrants, in accordance with department policies.

Transports violators to County Jail and completes necessary paperwork and reports.

Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints; conducts searches of persons, buildings and vehicles to find potential weapons, contraband, evidence, and stolen property.

Assists federal, state, and local law enforcement officials with investigations and emergencies.

Assists stranded motorists; assists or rescues individuals in need of aid.

Executes warrants and serves subpoenas and civil papers; testifies in court, as required.

Controls the scene of a traffic accident and directs traffic, as necessary.

Performs animal and varmint control; removes and relocates livestock from roadways.
Escorts elections personnel and equipment from polling sites to central office.
May assist in the coordination or conduct of community/school-based programs or perform other special assignments, as needed; attends training, seminars, and meetings; performs other duties as assigned.

Courthouse Security
Insures a safe environment for the public and employees using the Tom Green County and District Court building complexes to identify unusual or suspicious behavior; operates metal detectors and X-ray scanning machines to detect concealed weapons and hazardous objects; seizes dangerous items such as knives, razors and box cutters, scissors and other sharp instruments and pepper spray; makes arrests for unlawful possession of drugs, and other penal code violations.

Mental Health
Responds to calls from law enforcement agencies, court personnel, hospitals, and other health care providers regarding persons in mental health crisis; utilizes knowledge of basic medical and psychiatric symptoms/behaviors to evaluate persons, and determines and takes appropriate action; transports patients to mental health facilities, serves as officers of the mental health courts; conducts welfare checks of individuals as requested by courts or other authorities; assists in the service of civil process and other duties as directed by Constables; performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of pertinent criminal and civil law; knowledge of law enforcement and departmental procedures and policies; knowledge of basic investigation procedures and rules of evidence; knowledge of the operation and care of small firearms; knowledge of first aid and CPR procedures.

Ability to properly interpret and enforce state and local law enforcement regulations; ability to analyze situations in an effective manner and make independent decisions while working in the field; ability to secure and properly document information from witnesses and suspects; ability to operate a patrol vehicle in a safe and prudent manner; ability to follow departmental policies, procedures, and directives from supervisory staff; ability to make effective decisions in stressful situations and react quickly and calmly during emergencies; ability to manage disruptive, violent, and assaultive offenders; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to operate computers, radios, security and office equipment; ability to perform first aid and CPR in accordance with training and accepted procedures; ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

Skill in oral/written communication and interpersonal relations.

Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Prolonged periods of sitting and driving; periodic walking, standing, bending, and reaching; occasional running and physical effort to apprehend and/or control offenders; subject to verbal abuse, physical assault, and other potentially dangerous situations; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.
Education and/or Experience Required:
Graduation from an accredited police academy.
Certificates and Licenses:
Licensed as a Peace Officer from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCOLE). Valid Texas Class C driver’s license.
