Shelter Advocate - this is a part-time position currently 4-11 on weekdays and some Saturdays and Sundays plus some holidays. Can pick up extra shifts if you want.

Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Summary

The Shelter Advocate staff will ensure the smooth running of the shelter on nights, weekends, and holidays and provide services to clients as needed. The Shelter Advocate is supervised by the Shelter Supervisor.

Duties

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Cover the 24-hour crisis line, assess callers for appropriate services and make referrals to shelter, outreach, and community resources.
  • Complete client intakes, departures and other client documentation as needed.
  • Complete dictation for every client on each shift and enter ACADV data system.
  • Complete Accident, Incident, and Maintenance Reports as needed.
  • See that the shelter is maintained and secured on their shift.
  • Distribute supplies to clients and replenish supplies as needed.
  • Organize and stock the shelter clothing closet to ensure proper seasonal clothing is available for clients and children.
  • Provide engaging activities for clients and children.
  • Provide transportation to clients and/or children as needed.
  • Assist with childcare as needed.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary by Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team. Ability to be flexible to work in a fast-paced crisis intervention environment. Some knowledge of the dynamics of intimate partner violence, shelter living and the challenge of shelter living on survivors of intimate partner violence. Some knowledge of laws pertaining to intimate partner violence. Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team. Ability to lift 25 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university or the equivalent in training and experience. Also preferred is some graduate training in counseling or social work. Shifts 8am- 5pm day, 4pm-11pm evening, 10:30pm-8:30am overnight. Shelter Advocate staff are required to provide coverage for the shelter on all days/shifts, including weekends and holidays, and must have the flexibility to be called in as needed. Shelter Advocate staff is expected to return calls/text from the On-call Supervisor regarding availability for shifts in a timely manner. Must have a valid Alabama Driver’s License and proof of liability insurance. Clearance through the State Central Registry on Child Abuse and Neglect. Proof of COVID vaccination. Must be U.S. Citizen or provide proof of eligibility to work in this country.
