EH&S Leader - Columbia, SC
Position Summary
The Safety Leader is responsible for directing the development, implementation, and evaluation of critical safety processes, programs, and procedures to achieve goals, objectives, and continuous improvement related to safety and health at the Columbia, SC facility.
The Safety Leader has the responsibility to engage the site leadership teams to ensure safety and health excellence, as well as provide information and guidance for activities relating to the site-wide safety objectives and to ensure that safety site goals are aligned with the business unit and corporate EHS goals. The Safety Leader works in a team environment where accountability for injury/illness prevention, EHS compliance assurance and asset protection is incumbent on both the leadership team and the individual.
Essential Functions

  • Facilitate site-specific health and safety management systems designed to reduce employee injuries and illnesses.
  • Ensure that occupational illnesses and injuries are immediately reported, thoroughly investigated, and promptly addressed, consistent with established standards.
  • Recommends, develops, and implements improvements in policies, procedures and equipment to prevent incidents and injuries.
  • Lead the safety committee with a focus of driving engagement of the members.
  • Assist in and support compliance with site regulatory environmental permits (training in handling of universal waste, used oil, and other RCRA wastes.)
  • Tracks and reports health & safety corrective actions from incident investigations and external evaluations.
  • Provides and directs plant safety training and annual compliance auditing in coordination with the corporate initiatives.
  • Participate in the site capital planning (as requested) including reviewing of the safety aspects of capital projects.
  • Support human resources in the implementation of wellness programs to meet site needs.
  • Promote appropriate stretching within the workforce with a focus on repetitive operations.
  • Evaluate the workforce from an ergonomic perspective and drive improvement annually.
  • Provides support to the plants' culture of continuous improvement. Able to lead and participate in kaizen workshops to firmly insert H&S thinking in all new standards and new procedures developed as a result of continuous improvement.
  • Actively participates as a member of the Leadership Team.
  • Provides 24 hour on call response for medical and environmental emergencies. Coordinates all facility emergency response and site evacuation programs, including the design and execution of annual drills and management communication.
  • Evaluates site safety measures and recommends improvement opportunities.
  • Inspects facility processes to detect existing or potential safety and health hazards, determines corrective or preventive measures where needed and follows up to ensure countermeasures have been implemented.
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the Corporation and the community; and maintains the professional competence, knowledge and skill necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.
  • Participate in weekly meetings of the EHS team and support improvement initiatives as asked.

Education / Competencies / Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5-10 years of related experience.
  • Professional knowledge of federal standards (OSHA, SC Fire Code, NFPA standards) for the manufacturing environment.
  • Applied knowledge of health and safety laws and regulations and have the ability to research specific compliance and regulatory requirements across federal and state regulations.
  • Certifications in health, and/or safety (i.e., ASP, CSP, etc.) a plus.
  • Knowledge of OHSAS 18000 a plus.
  • Demonstrates a high concern for detail, accuracy, and compliance to company and corporate policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional groups, Strong team player.
  • Excellent written, verbal and computer skills.
  • Proven time management skills.
  • Independent worker requiring minimal day-to-day direction or oversight.
  • Energetic, motivated individual, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to interact with professionals at all levels.
