Job Title: Server Systems Technician

Campus Location: Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a "home" location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: This position implements and supports the entire server infrastructure across all campuses in order to maintain student services, instructional systems, business processes, and security access. They engage institutional stakeholders at all levels and provide innovation to ensure quality technology solutions are provided that enable college business and academic operations. This includes: servers, virtualization, directory services, data security, and user management. Activities include: implementing, maintaining, securing, diagnosing, repairing, and recovering various data and systems within the environment.
The Server Systems Technician position supports the college's enterprise-level server environment including all data center systems and solutions. This environment is comprised of over 200 servers, over 150 Terabytes of storage, and hundreds of software applications. All college business and academic systems and services are dependent on the critical systems supported by this position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Configures, maintains, and manages a wide variety of server infrastructure technology in an enterprise virtual environment to include Microsoft Windows Server/Linux server environments and storage. Also responsible for the design, integration and support of clouds systems for the institution. These systems are critical for the college to maintain student services, instructional methods, and business processes. 
  • Maintains and manages user accounts and security access to systems, computers, shared data, and email to ensure access and authentication to critical college systems for all students and employees. Works closely with faculty and staff to develop, execute, and deliver Server Systems services to meet institutional needs and maintain the security of college systems. Maintains Microsoft Active Directory services, Microsoft domain group policies, and enterprise system security solutions that impact and enable all college operations. 
  • Troubleshoots and resolves server, system, software, or user specific issues along with providing support and troubleshooting the Banner ERP and integrated systems. Serves as liaison to TBR for Banner outages, upgrades, patches, and any other Banner related issues. Automates complex tasks in order to simplify the process to improve efficiency and maintain critical systems/services that support college business and academic operations. 
  • Performs and verifies backups ensuring business continuity utilizing a complex disaster recovery operation that involves multi-tiered solutions with complex software which is utilizes for not only backup but also recovery, scanning, immutability, and other similar foundation used for recovering computing data. 
  • May perform other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Information Technology or related discipline. Will consider expertise and experience in lieu of degree.
  • Five years of career information technology experience.
  • Advanced skills in evaluating and resolving hardware, software, and networking problems to maintain college business and academic computing operations.
  • Advanced ability to evaluate enterprise level technology systems and develop sustainable solutions to ensure college-wide data and Server Systems functionality.
  • Knowledge of server, virtual, and storage foundation components to create an immersive computing environment for students and employees.
  • Knowledge of Windows Admin tools, VMware, backup software, PowerShell, etc. for managing Server Systems, backups, and automating intricate tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a highly related field
  • Any specialized certification in Information Technology or Computer Science.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and support an enterprise server infrastructure.
  • Experience as a computer technician, server technician, system administrator, or IT Analyst

Leadership & Supervisory:  The incumbent has a significant impact on the success of all college technology systems and services. They impact all areas of the Informational and Educational Technologies team and the entire college in all matters of technology computing and storage.  They are engaged in highly technical solutions and ensure that projects are completed successfully.  This position has no direct authority or responsibility of others.

Most tasks completed by an employee in this position are completed without consulting others. Resources, guidelines, and supervisor consultation are available when needed. Work is evaluated largely for progress towards completion of objectives and medium to large projects.

Environment & Working Conditions: Office environment is temperature controlled with occasional fluctuations, well lit, and free from loud noises and unnecessary interruptions.  Data Center and other technology system locations are loud and could expose the employee to heat, cold, or humidity.

Physical Demands (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays): 

  • After hours and weekend work is required for system upgrades, patches, and project implementations.
  • Ability to travel to multiple locations.
  • Potential for overnight trips for training, conferences, and product evaluation.
  • Large amounts of time spent looking at computer monitors could lead to some eye strain, stress, or headache issues.
  • Repetitive stress injuries could occur.
  • Ability to lift server and other infrastructure equipment up to 50 lbs
