Heal the Bay is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds of Greater Los Angeles safe, healthy and clean. Heal the Bay’s Senior Watershed Specialist is the lead watershed coordinator for LA County’s Safe Clean Water Program (SCWP) in the Central Santa Monica Bay Watershed area. The major function of the Watershed Coordinator centers around connecting stakeholders, such as municipalities, schools, NGO’s and neighborhood groups, with technical resources and support in pursuit of SCWP goals:

• Help protect public health, ensuring safer, greener, healthier, and more livable spaces for all.

• Update LA County’s water system?to capture more of the billions of gallons of water we lose each year.

• Help protect our coastal waters and beaches?from the trash and contaminants in stormwater that make people sick and threaten marine life.

• Modernize our 100-year-old water system infrastructure?using a combination of nature, science, and new technology.

• Prepare our region for the effects of a changing climate?– including recurring cycles of drought, wildfire, and flooding.

Position Overview

The Senior Watershed Specialist ensures the SCWP contract deliverables are met including: monthly reports to the LA County Flood Control District, meeting with existing coalitions and collaborative to conduct community engagement, education and developing new stormwater capture projects in the central Santa Monica Bay watershed area.

Essential Job Functions Include:

• Engage municipalities, community groups and other stakeholders to identify and develop project concepts with special focus on under resourced communities;

• Work with Technical Assistance Team to bring resources to stakeholders interested in making neighborhood change;

• Identify and help leverage and secure additional funding sources.

• Provide leadership in community outreach efforts related to watershed planning.

• Facilitate collaborative decision-making to develop and implement actions that address community priorities.

• Integrate community, municipality, and regional priorities through partnerships and extensive networks.

• Organize public outreach events to educate Stakeholders.

• Collaborate with all other Safe, Clean Water Program Watershed Coordinators to help ensure consistency in implementation and inform each other of effective efforts, outreach, and communication approaches.

• Design program materials, including marketing, worksheets, surveys, etc.

• Carry out effective Program Evaluation tasks, under the guidance of the agency Evaluation team.

• Assist in modification or creation of new program materials where applicable;

• Other duties as assigned related to organizational mission and programs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS.

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in program management;

• strong project management, communication, interpersonal, and team leadership skills; excellent written and verbal presentation skills;

• a self-starter with strong organizational and time management skills; proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, prioritizes tasks, and follow projects to completion on schedule; strategic planning and program design/development experience;

• desire to work in a team environment;

• flexibility, initiative, and a collaborative spirit; professional, positive, work ethic.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Considerable knowledge of environmental justice, regional water resource issues and other community needs in the region;

• Skillset to facilitate meetings and engagement efforts with a variety of interested parties;

• Team player;

• Spanish language skills a plus;

• Plan, organize and implement outreach and engagement activities;

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationship with City staff, schools, neighborhood and community groups, and environmental advocacy groups;

• Communicate and work effectively with persons of diverse backgrounds and assist them in using available resources and building capacity;

• Prepare and present clear concise oral and written reports;

• Assess and comprehend community problems and recommend and implement appropriate courses of action; and

• Must have access to reliable transportation to move throught the project area.

Compensation:

• This is a full-time, non-exempt position. $36.00-$40.00/hour depending on experience, with appropriate state and federal taxes withheld.

Benefits:

• Dental, medical, health insurance, and vacation benefits are included as part of employment. Heal the Bay will cover 90% of benefits. In accordance with California Labor Law, employee will be eligible to receive up to 72 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year, after completing 90 days of employment. All Heal the Bay recognized Holidays will be compensated in accordance to time worked.

Schedule:

Participation in some weekend and evening events, as well as county wide travel. Heal the Bay operates in hybrid manner, in the office 2 days per week. Heal the Bay offers a dynamic work environment with highly motivated colleagues including other staff and volunteers.

Physical Demands:

The employee is occasionally required to work in outdoor conditions, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
