We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Veterinary Technician.
In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for monitoring research animals housed in animal facilities; maintains clinical records. Performs assigned technical duties. Performs services in support of the veterinary function. Maintains inventory of pharmaceutical, surgical and animal-related supplies. Assists with ensuring departmental and regulatory compliance.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintains an awareness of regulatory requirements applicable to responsibilities. Implements enrichment program for canine and primate animals. Ensures necessary documentation is maintained up-to-date and thorough. Ensures that procedures meet requirements set by federal and state agencies, as well as NYULMCs policy on animal welfare.
  • Ensures adequate supply levels of all items by monitoring the use of item daily and ordering new stock. Reviews the condition of merchandise on a regular basis. Receives, checks in materials, and places them into stock in accordance with established procedures. Monitors records of use of controlled substances following federal regulations.Verifies animal orders and places orders with commercial vendors.
  • Performs routine grooming care as required (nail trimming, teeth clipping, etc.). Separates overcrowded rodents following established guidelines. Maintains rodent sentinel program; records and maintains data in order to document results. Trains investigators and/or their technicians in performance of routine techniques. Performs routine procedures for investigators on a fee basis as requested; completes appropriate forms for charges based on established schedule. Maintains necropsy by keeping inventory up-to-date and coordinates scheduling of room. Receives dogs; ensures that animals meet requested specifications and notifies investigators of arrival and other pertinent information. Performs routine euthanasia on rodents and rabbits as required.
  • Performs routine diagnostic tests as needed (x-rays, parasitology, serology); labels results accurately to ensure correct identification. Arranges submission of laboratory samples for analysis by outside lab. Assists in surgery by preparing patient and analysis by outside lab.Administers anesthesia and monitors patient intra-operatively.Provides routine post-operative care to animals.
  • Conducts daily rounds to observe condition of animals; records appropriate information.Implements prescribed treatments (medications, diets, etc.) as instructed. Advises investigators of changes in animal conditions. Documents treatments and notifications daily. Maintains animal health records and updates data on an ongoing basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a Bachelor's or Associate's degree from an accredited Veterinary Science Technology program or Bachelor's degree in Animal Science. Two years experience in an animal research facility is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

A New York State Veterinary Technician License

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $45,541 - 70,000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
