Marstel-Day, LLC, a premier environmental and sustainability consulting firm, is seeking a senior-level Urban Planner or Land Use Planner to lead diverse planning requirements.

The Senior Planner will support federal planning projects with the Department of Defense (DOD) and may also support requirements for the National Park Service (NPS), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), other federal agencies, state and local governments, and/or nongovernmental organizations. The Senior Planner will provide project management in one or more areas of master planning, urban planning, compatible Land Use planning, sustainability, resilience planning, conservation planning, real estate, and partnership development.

While candidates from multiple backgrounds could be successful in this position, strong candidates will possess excellent team leadership and client engagement skills along with personal motivation and a creative approach to the execution of project requirements. The incumbent will leverage strong knowledge of federal planning policies and processes, engagement and facilitation experience, strong analytical skills, knowledge of effective research methods, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, geography, public policy, or similar fields; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners is a strong plus. Other certifications in areas of landscape architecture, sustainability, charrette facilitation, GIS, or similar areas are a benefit.
  • Senior-level candidates require 7+ years of relevant experience. More experience is a plus.
  • Project Manager experience for Federal projects is preferred.
  • Experience in client relationship management and/or business development is a plus.
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently in flexible work environment.
  • Intellectual curiosity, paired with a high level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite programs Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, CAD, or similar software tools is a plus.
  • Strong familiarity with online meeting platforms (Zoom, MS Teams).
  • Up to 10% travel is required to support charrettes, workshops, meetings, and site visits. Travel occurs to Washington DC most often, but may occasionally include locations around the world.

The incumbent must:

  • Be eligible to work in the U.S. (DHS Form I-9 must be completed by the incumbent and submitted to DHS for verification of citizenship and eligibility through E-Verify)
  • Submit to a background check as a condition of any final offer of employment.
  • Submit to required background and credit checks in order to obtain and maintain a secret clearance. This required contingency and evaluation continues even after hiring.
