Job Description
We are seeking a Sr. Underwriting Associate, Middle Markets to join our Sompo North American team located in our Los Angeles, CA. Charlotte, NC. or New York City office.
Sompo provides a client-centric service approach by offering comprehensive
multi-line capabilities to accounts in select industries including real estate, hospitality, financial institutions, life sciences, technology, and professional services. Taking a holistic approach to risk management, the unit offers commercial property, primary casualty (general liability, commercial auto, workers' compensation), lead umbrella, and environmental coverages, as well as parametric natural catastrophe products to small, middle-market and large accounts across target industries in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Sompo also offers the same level of sophisticated services and coverages to Asian-interest accounts in the U.S. and Mexico.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists underwriters with reviewing submissions, rating accounts, drafting quotes, binders, policies, and endorsements
  • Performs underwriting analysis and completes risk reports
  • Codes, bills, registers, processes, and distributes insurance invoices, binders, policies, and endorsement within processing standards established by leadership
  • Prepares all policies in accordance with final binders inclusive of review by underwriting staff
  • Maintain file integrity by ensuring all necessary documents are filed in ImageRight
  • Initiates, completes, and sends quote letters to brokers
  • Rates various lines of business following set workflows and guidelines
  • Contacts external distribution partners for any required or outstanding underwriting information; pre or post binding as needed to underwrite and complete file documentation
  • Implements and maintains a field service reputation that is recognized as superior in the industry
  • Provides support for file audits by maintaining files and conducting file reviews, QA/QC as needed
  • Review and resolve premium discrepancies; help other UAs with premium discrepancies
  • Initiates and completes pricing models
  • Monitors the in-office underwriting workflow to meet designated timelines established by management
  • Reviews and analyze facultative reinsurance certificates as determined by management
  • Assists with the appointment process for new agents
  • Facilitates event and meeting planning, including providing agendas and key data
  • Requests quotes for jurisdiction inspections and help UT manager with vendor management (property specific)
  • Serves as first point of contact for loss control and claims
  • Returns of calls and e-mails promptly and in all cases, within 24 hours of receipt
  • Provides back up support to other Underwriting Technicians as necessary
  • Process and sign-off on endorsements within authority
  • Participate in workflow and process management with vendors
  • Responsible for Underwriting Analysis
  • Participate in the creation and development of the team's underwriting workflows and processes
  • Performs other special projects as assigned
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a technical/underwriting assistant with similar duties
  • Knowledge of and willingness to work as a team, supporting internal and external customers
  • Ability and willingness to learn and understand terminology, coverages and appetite for specific industry groups and customers
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Your communication style is flexible to the situation. You communicate clearly and with a purpose
  • Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products, NitroPro & ImageRight and Adobe Acrobat
  • Able to multi-task while demonstrating attention to detail
  • Calm under pressure. Excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks. Comfortable challenging norms while working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the organization
  • A strong customer service bias. Want to get to yes. Known for your super responsiveness.

Salary Range: $55,000– $95,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience
