Looking for either an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter. This role will analyze, evaluate, make, and document decisions to achieve profitable underwriting results.  Recognize exposures to loss, identify coverage alternatives, develop risk management recommendations, and adequately price to an expected profitability level.  Be a resource and support the sales force in the production and servicing of profitable business.  Communicate with all customers in a manner that is professional, respectful, and timely.  Continually expand underwriting knowledge and actively look for and recommend efficiencies.  Manage assigned underwriting territory.  Position will have an established binding authority that recognizes level of underwriting knowledge consistent with experience.

 

**This is a hybrid position that requires 2 days per week in the office and can be based in either of our four locations:

1) Milwaukee, WI
2) Madison, WI
3) Merrill, WI 
4) Mechanicsburg, PA

Underwriter

 

*Senior level Underwriter will require advanced skills, knowledge and experience

 

  • Within established binding authority and in compliance with filings, effectively write and retain profitable business to meet company objectives.
  • Using various sources of information, analyze, evaluate, make, and document decisions to achieve profitable underwriting results on transactions for prospective, new business, and existing customers.  Recognize exposures to loss, identify coverage alternatives, develop risk management recommendations, and adequately price to an expected profitable level.  Negotiate solutions keeping the customer in mind.  Decline/nonrenew business not meeting underwriting standards.
  • Communicate with all customers professionally, respectfully, and timely.  Communicate with supervisor on issues exceeding binding authority and through monthly letters on territory issues.
  • Develop and maintain a positive working relationship with the sales force.  Provide support in the production and service of profitable business.  Explain and help develop an understanding of coverages, forms, guidelines, and underwriting philosophies.
  • Continue to develop underwriting knowledge to a higher level through an awareness of changes within underwriting territory; understanding Church Mutual and insurance industry coverages and policy forms; understanding religions, religious organizations, and operations specific to our niche; and professional knowledge development using external and internal opportunities.
  • Actively look for opportunities and recommend efficiencies to improve underwriting performance and processes.  Recognize and promote change in a positive manner.
  • Focus to meet customer expectations through:  meeting department timeliness expectations; assisting in territories as needed; and positive interactions with all customers (including sales, other departments, and technical support).
  • Miscellaneous.
    • Meet and travel with territory sales personnel as necessary.
    • Be a resource and share underwriting knowledge with others in the department.  Provide training to others to expand their underwriting knowledge.

 

Essential Functions

  • Within established binding authority and in compliance with filings, effectively write and retain profitable business to meet company objectives.
  • Review insurance submissions from prospective, new, and existing customers; recognize exposures; provide coverage alternatives; offer risk management suggestions; and adequately price insurance coverage.
  • Be a resource and support the sales force in the production and service of profitable business.
  • Effectively communicate with others in all areas of the operation.  Update supervisor on issues exceeding binding authority.
  • Continue to develop underwriting knowledge and actively look for and recommend efficiencies to improve underwriting performance and processes.
  • Meet customer expectations through meeting department timeliness expectations, assisting in other territories, and positive interactions with all customers.
  • Meet or travel with territory sales personnel as necessary and be a resource to and train others within the department.

 

Necessary Knowledge and Abilities:

 

  • Knowledge of the underwriting function and insurance coverages and principles.
  • Knowledge of religions and religious organizations.
  • Proven ability to identify and analyze exposures, recognize areas of concern, and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Proven ability to make decisions outside parameter-based situations but within binding authority.
  • Proven ability to explain decisions to others and negotiate appropriate solutions.
  • Solid organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated desire and commitment to continually learn, accept new challenges, and strive for personal improvement/growth.
  • Support others by sharing knowledge of underwriting function, coverages, and principles.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships throughout the company.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others.
  • Ability to learn Church Mutual computer systems and stay current with changes.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Responsible, dedicated behavior to accomplish workload expectations.

Underwriter

Candidates with varying experience levels can be considered for roles below the Senior Underwritwe level, based on demonstrated skills and potential for growth within the Underwriting department.

 

Will consider from the following:

  • A strong background in property and casualty underwriting and a minimum of five years' experience working in a professional underwriting function.
  • Five years' experience in a professional insurance position in property/casualty insurance plus completion of the AU designation or two parts of CPCU may satisfy the need to have five years' underwriting experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in risk management may satisfy the experience requirement. Other undergraduate degrees may satisfy a portion of the experience requirement.

 

Education:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Individual must have one of the following based on prior experience:
  • Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation.
  • Two completed exams in the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) program.
  • A bachelor's degree, which is desirable.

 

Senior Underwriter

  • Bachelor's degree is required. Associate in Underwriting designation or successful completion of two Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) courses may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 7+ years of experience with a property and casualty insurance company is required. A bachelor’s degree may waive a portion of the experience requirement.
