WORK HOURS: 6:30 AM TO 3:00 PM with Stand-by hours
This is a skilled laboring position in which the individual works as part of a team, often in a leadership role, in the construction, renovation, and maintenance of all concrete and brick paver construction within the City of St. Cloud.


Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors the status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Demonstrates considerable knowledge of asphalt and masonry construction, including construction of forms, types of concrete and appropriate applications, calculation of quantities, and scheduling the delivery of materials to the job site.
  • Performs all the work of subordinate staff including forming, pouring, and finishing concrete. Installation, construction, and repair of all city drainage systems. Leveling and finishing asphalt for road or street repairs. Installation, repair, and maintenance of brick pavers.
  • Removes and repairs asphalt and concrete roadways, streets, walks, and driveways for the repair of sub-grade utilities, and the repair of the streets and walkways or sidewalks.
  • Maintains records of work performed with duty assignments using computerized maintenance management systems. (City Works)
  • Operates small and medium-sized equipment including concrete construction, brick paver installation, and cutting tools on the job as instructed.
  • Install traffic control signs.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training in masonry, supplemented by two (2) years of experience in block laying, brick paver installation, and/or cement finishing; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida state-restricted Class A driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 150 days with an acceptable driving history.
Must obtain and maintain the following certifications within one year of hire date:
  • Stormwater Level I
  • Maintenance of Traffic Level I
  • Trenching and Shoring
  • Confined Space
  • Forklift Operator
  • FEMA 100 & 700
  • Certified Concrete Paver Installer

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. Must be able to routinely and repetitively lift and/ or move up to 25 lbs.; frequently lift and or move up to 50lbs.; and occasionally lift and or move up to 100lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Mathematics:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and confined spaces. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
