This Senior Toxicologist reports to the Site Assessment and Toxicology Section (SATS) Section manager, and the position responsibilities include establishing partnerships to address public health threats from environmental contaminants. The Senior Toxicologist provides expertise on non-routine human health toxicological issues, collaborating with various entities, including the US Environmental Protection Agency, Washington State Department of Ecology, other state and local public health agencies, and Tribal governments. This senior role works closely with health education staff to improve health education and outcomes, and to prioritize equity and environmental justice. This position will be one of the technical leads for this office and will be overseeing methodologies, research, and information development.

The duty station for this position is Tumwater, WA, but telework (mobile work) is currently expected for most work activities. Incumbents may be expected to report to DOH offices or attend in-person meetings with office staff, and internal and external partners around the state.

Required Qualifications
Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.

Option 1:
Master of Science degree in toxicology or in a health or ecological-related science (e.g., chemistry, environmental science) with a major emphasis in toxicology, AND four (4) years of relevant toxicology experience that includes one or more of the following:
  • Evaluating the exposures and effects of toxic chemicals on health outcomes, including chemicals of high concern to children.
  • Conducting exposure assessments including the design, implementation, and/or analysis of biomonitoring surveys.
  • Leading and/or collaborating with internal and external agencies and academic partners to identify priority environmental public health toxicological issues, including developing and vetting policy initiatives related to toxicology.
  • Evaluating toxicology research literature for relevance to emerging human health toxicology issues;
  • Articulating policy on human health toxicological issues to workgroups advisory committees, and legislative or regulatory bodies at the state and federal levels.

Option 2:
Ph.D. degree in toxicology, or in a health or ecological-related science AND three (3) years of relevant toxicology experience that includes one or more of the following:
  • Evaluating the exposures and effects of toxic chemicals on health outcomes, including chemicals of high concern to children.
  • Conducting exposure assessments including the design, implementation, and/or analysis of biomonitoring surveys.
  • Leading and/or collaborating with internal and external agencies and academic partners to identify priority environmental public health toxicological issues, including developing and vetting policy initiatives related to toxicology.
  • Evaluating toxicology research literature for relevance to emerging human health toxicology issues;
  • Articulating policy on human health toxicological issues to workgroups advisory committees, and legislative or regulatory bodies at the state and federal levels.


All experience will include:

Practical skills in MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, database management, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.
