Job description

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Cardiology intends to hire for one position at either the Sonographer, Pay Grade 5, or Sr. Sonographer, Pay Grade 7, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please indicate in your cover letter the position you wish to be considered for or indicate both.Within the Pediatric Graphics Laboratory, perform complex ultrasound procedures at an advanced level that requires independent judgment and initiative in order to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing and treating patient illness; participate in teaching, evaluating, and advising cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students.Duties to include:Sonographer:* Perform and analyze pediatric cardiac ultrasonography studies including M-mode, 2D, Color Doppler, 3D echocardiograms and fetal echocardiograms.

Present fetal echocardiogram experience is not a requirement.* Provide and maintain quality diagnostic ultrasound scans as accepted by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).* Effectively apply knowledge base of complex congenital heart lesions to echocardiographic imaging of patients from neonates, older children and adults, and fetal echocardiograms.* Responsible for performing 3D echo studies of complex pediatric cardiac abnormalities.* Responsible for delicate and careful handling of imaging sessions with very premature infants and critically ill children, including patients with imaging challenges - such as uncooperative or active children.* Participate in tele-echo services.* Determine equipment malfunctions and report to appropriate person.* Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.Senior Sonographer:* Obtains and documents a comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and developmental health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.* In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.* Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.* Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.* Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural, needed to achieve expected outcomes.* Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.* Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.* Facilitates the patient's transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.For a full job description, please send an e-mail to the contact listed below.About the Department of Pediatrics:The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is a national leader in pediatric medicine. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity.

The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, advanced imaging, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support has outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The division has a multi-purpose diagnostic and interventional procedure lab which is constantly expanding and including state-of-the-art technologies.Sonographer:Required Qualifications:* Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e.

Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography oro CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, oro Completion of a bachelor's degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography* Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment in the specialty area of Pediatric Cardiac Echocardiography* Demonstrated understanding of cardiac physiology.* Willingness to travel to outreach clinics throughout the state of Iowa.* Excellent oral and written communication skillsHighly Desired Qualifications:* Bachelor's degree in a healthcare or science related field.* Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty area of Fetal Echocardiography. Not a requirement during applicationDesired Qualifications:* Experience in performing fetal echocardiograms.* Experience in performing pediatric echocardiograms.Senior Sonographer:Required Qualifications:* A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experienceo CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, oro Completion of a bachelor's degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography* Extensive (3-5 years) progressively responsible experience in diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular sonography* Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or other nationally recognized accreditation organizations for primary specialty.* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.* Experience providing clinical education to students and sonographers and residents.Highly Desired Qualifications:* A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences is highly desirable.* Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty area of Fetal Echocardiography.
