Job Summary and Qualifications

The Senior Data Scientist is an important member of the team charged with launching the Center for Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Research (CTACSR) at HCA. The Senior Data Scientist will focus on utilizing our data resources to improve the clinical and operating performance of HCA facilities and trauma centers, and perform statistical analysis, contribute statistical input and represent the research data science function of CTACSR. The position is primarily responsible for engaging with researchers across HCA to promote the research services of the CTACSR. The Senior Data Scientist participates in and leads scientific teams that will help trauma researchers to maximize the potential of their data, explore possible research partnerships, conduct multicenter research studies and trials, and advise medical students and residents in their capstone research projects. Furthermore, this position will provide statistical consultation including design of studies/experiments or surveys, analysis of data, interpretation of results and preparation of reports. A requirement of this position is a comprehensive understanding of healthcare-based research specializing in trauma surgery, surgical critical care, acute care surgery, burn, emergency care, injury prevention and health policy.


The Senior Data Scientist leads the design and development of advanced analytics solutions that enables HCA to transform clinical operations by unlocking the insights hidden in the data. Additionally, the Senior Data Scientist will play a crucial role in developing and analyzing a variety of research protocols and accompanying data using statistical methods, develops appropriate study protocols, analysis plans, design and build data warehouses, and data transformation pipelines.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Initiate and conduct investigator-initiated research projects aligned with HCA’s operational interests and priorities.
  • Uses data wrangling skills and learns techniques specific to HCA data systems.
  • Provide statistical input and support related to trial design and in the development of protocol synopses and protocols
  • Advise on database design and documentation to ensure that all data required for analysis purposes are captured adequately
  • Develop randomization schema
  • Develop statistical analysis plans (SAP)
  • Performs hypothesis generation and testing, in particular data oriented discovery methodologies such as cross validation. These functions are performed in a mathematical environment such as R or SAS.
  • Oversees and manages SQL server.
  • Models, analyzed and visualized structured and unstructured data using advanced analytical techniques and tools
  • Writes statistical portion of manuscript based on results of analysis and address manuscript revisions based on reviewer's comments.
  • Deliver predictive and prescriptive solutions leveraging machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Performs analytics using regression and classification techniques such as logistic regression, boosting, SVM and neural networks
  • Uses mathematics, programming and visualization to discover, in partnership with the business, opportunities and insights arising from HCA data systems.
  • Works to broaden and hone their analytics and statistics skills to develop expertise in working with clinical, operational and financial data.
  • Investigates defined problems, gathers data and input and seeks guidance for determining root causes.
  • Collaborate on new and ongoing projects across the enterprise
  • Builds relationships within the service lines and across multi-disciplinary teams to assist in facilitating discussions regarding data outputs and feedback on usage activities to improve research output.
  • Holds discussions and prepares documents for colleagues.
  • Seeks and shares opinions, and input. Asks questions well, seeks feedback and handles conflict.

  • Utilizes multiple sources for technical, analytical and professional development.
  • Understands and checks for bias, inaccuracy and omission. Seeks out experts. Integrates multiple data sources.
  • Continues to build skills in critical thinking, change management, and healthcare industry data.
  • Other duties assigned as necessary, to support HCA Research Activities, Data & Analytics.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree Required/Doctorate Preferred with 5 plus years of experience
  • Analytical and technical skills with ability to analyze issues, assess technical risks, and recommend solutions in a timely manner. Ability and desire to learn basic programming language, such as Clojure, Python, PySpark, or Ruby.
  • Understanding of the relational model as it pertains to SQL development.
  • Basic understanding of and experience with BI tools, NoSQL databases, model fitting processes (cross validation), analytic environments (Teradata, R, SAS, SPSS), statistical techniques (regression and hypothesis testing) and Big Data environments (Hadoop and its ecosystem).
  • Exposure to machine learning techniques, such as boosting, SVMs and neural networks.
