As a Sr. Relay Technician / Field Engineer you will lead the field crew during new Green field and Brown Field upgrade projects. These projects will be focused around but not limited to our major utility clients (First Energy, Exelon) and include; new substation startup & commissioning, transmission relay upgrades, distribution relay upgrades, RTU replacements & SCADA testing, transmission breaker replacements, distribution breaker replacements, end to end testing, fault recording upgrades, power meter upgrades, transformer relay upgrades, and transformer replacements.

This position is responsible for:

  • Interpretation, reading, verifying and testing of all voltage and current drawings and schematics (comparing all elementary three line diagrams to control point to point diagrams, completing point to point wire checks, simulated load checks, etc.)
  • Interpretation, reading, verifying and testing of all DC & AC control drawings and schematics (comparing all elementary single & three line diagrams to control point to point diagrams, completing point to point wire checks, completing all functional control checks, perform end to end testing etc.)
  • Commission and trouble shoot new install substation equipment including (electro- mechanical, solid state, and microprocessor) relays, metering devices, and RTU / communication equipment
  • Perform routine maintenance, trouble shooting and repair of substation equipment including (electro-mechanical, solid state, and microprocessor) relays, metering devices, and RTU / communication equipment
  • Assist fellow Technicians / Field Engineers with technical issues as needed
  • Assist Project manager in scheduling and planning for medium to large size projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (or combination of qualifying education and field experience) working as a Relay Technician and or Field Engineer working in high voltage substations 4kv-500kv
  • Experience testing & commissioning in both Greenfield and Brownfield substations.
  • Demonstrated experience using Doble 6150, Protection suite, RTS, Doble DUC, Aspen
  • Relay database, various SEL software packages, various CT test sets and associated software. Ability to create protection suite test plans is a plus
  • Proven experience with LOTO and Human Performance procedures
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook)
  • Effective communications skills
  • Tracking job progress and reporting to PM
  • Can provide proper guidance, direction and oversight to Team Members
  • Can adequately perform/direct or advise others in utility work activities

Knowledge of:

  • Safe Work Practices and procedures, methods, tools and materials used in the Electrical
  • SP&C testing & commissioning field
  • Mitigating risks, error prevention tools, job briefings and safety observations
  • Safety equipment, tools, materials and supplies
  • Principles of electrical theory related to electrical circuits and wiring systems
  • Construction and functions of a variety of electrical equipment used in power generation, transmission and distribution
  • O.S.H.A., M.O.S.H.A, and 1910-269 High Voltage Act
  • Familiarity with governing bodies and regulatory agencies, policies and procedures applicable to assigned tasks
  • Safe practices pertaining to operating and working from ladders and aerial devices

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

  • Mostly works inside of Substation Control rooms but is also required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Works on or near energized high voltage equipment, at heights, and in confined areas. May be exposed to toxic/hazardous substances. Requires physical exertion and lifting or manipulating of objects that weigh more than 50 pounds
  • Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies/procedures

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to regularly and punctually attend work at the office or other assigned locations
  • Operate a motorized vehicle, which may include inclement weather conditions
  • Operate standard equipment for assigned tasks
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to include grasping, and reaching.
  • Good vision to read prints and computer screens
  • Ability to hear and speak to communicate in person and over the telephone
  • Must wear assigned FR clothing and all personal protective equipment (PPE)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 -4 year EET or Electrical engineering degree is preferred but not required with relevant field experience
  • Must be able to pass all required training and access requirements

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid driver's license
  • First Aid Card, CPR Certification
