Job description

An incentive up to $5,000 may be offered to assist in relocation or other expenses. A full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory is required. This is an employed Federal Civilian position that affords job security, a competitive base salary, bonuses, paid vacation, paid Federal Holidays, a sick leave benefit, continuing education opportunities, and a first-class health and retirement benefit package.
Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/29/2024.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
LAUTENBERG AMENDEMENT: This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001).
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current, valid, state-issued driver's license.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military Police Officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.
You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:
  • Arrest
  • Criminal Investigation
  • First Response
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Public Safety and Security
  • Security

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: This factor covers the requirements and physical demands placed on the employee by the work assignment. This includes physical characteristics and abilities (e.g., specific agility and dexterity requirements) and the physical exertion involved in the work (e.g. climbing, lifting, pushing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or reaching).

Some walking, standing, or driving an automobile may be required during a normal workday in connection with travel to and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the worksite. Items carried typically are light objects such as briefcases, notebooks, and data processing reports. There may be short periods of moving around to check a few doors and locks; and wearing an equipment belt containing a weapon, light, handcuffs, and related items. Lifting of moderately heavy objects is not normally required. No special physical effort or ability is required to perform the work.
At Level 8-2, the work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms, pursuing suspects, or participating in weapons or other kinds of training activities, climbing stairs in office buildings, or walking foot patrols in and around large buildings. In some positions, the work may regularly involve lifting and carrying of heavy objects of kilograms (50 pounds) or less, such as weapons. Some positions may require common physical characteristics and abilities in agility and dexterity and the strength to pursue, apprehend, and detain uncooperative suspects.
At level 8-3, the work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search or pursuit activities, or defending oneself or others against physical attack. The position's responsibility to conduct searches, engage in surveillance, and participate in similar operations reflect the physical demands typical of Level 8-2. On a regular and recurring basis, the work requires strenuous exertion to physically restrain disorderly individuals' ability to lift or carry injured or hurt persons and evacuate persons to, complete many required and recurring training activities, training. The position may be assigned to and traverse all segments of VA within their area of responsibility.
