Job description

Under the supervision of the Deputy General Counsel or Sr. Assistant General Counsel, provides in-depth, complex, and highly responsible legal support and assistance to in-house attorneys in all phases of civil litigation and administrative proceedings. Serves as lead paralegal in planning, performing and reviewing work necessary to support complex litigation. Provides mentoring and training of paralegal and secretarial staff. Responds to media/public/customer Open Records/Open Meetings Act requests and/or inquiries. Provides general administrative/clerical and technical support, support for general business transactions, and notary services as requested and/or as needed.Supports and assists in all phases of litigation and administrative proceedings including pre-litigation and/or pre-hearing fact investigations, commencement of litigation, discovery, hearing, trial, and post-trial services. Interviews witnesses, obtains statements, and gathers evidence such as police reports, photographs, etc. Researches substantive and procedural laws and rules utilizing on-line legal research platforms (ex. Westlaw, internet). Drafts memorandums of law, pleadings, motions/orders, and all written forms of discovery requests. Coordinates service of process. Assists attorneys in complying with discovery requests. Reviews and organizes discovery obtained from opposing parties. Schedules, reviews and summarizes depositions and medical records. Assists with e-discovery needs, organizing files and evidence for trial, serving subpoenas, organizing exhibits, coordinating technology needs with court, and assisting attorneys during hearings and trial. Drafts notices of appeal, requests transcripts and prepares documents necessary to enforce judgements. Manages attorneys' calendars. Creates and maintains hard copy litigation files. Reviews the work of and provides mentoring, guidance, and training to paralegal and secretarial staff. Files, records and/or researches civil, bankruptcy and criminal court records, UCC financing statements, deeds, easements, mortgages, releases, etc. Provides technical support through use of video, audio and web conferencing, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, graphs, etc. Assists in researching, and retrieving documents for and preparing responses to Open Records/Open Meetings Act requests from television and print media, attorneys, customers and members of the general public. Assists in preparing documents for general business transactions (ex. Property acquisitions). Interacts with outside government agencies, corporations and firms. Procures and manages in-house library reference materials and other resources. Performs other duties and functions as requested and/or needed.

Knowledge of the Kentucky legal
system, including the structure of local and state courts, legal terminology
and principles, procedural rules, court filing/recording systems, legal
research technology, and methods of legal research; knowledge of MSD policies
and procedures; skill in performing analysis, logical reasoning and using independent
judgment in carrying out assigned tasks; skill in handling multiple priorities/tasks
and stressful situations; skill in solving problems; skill in written and
verbal communication, including interviewing and presentations; skill in interpersonal
interactions; skill in mentoring and training others; skill in operating a PC
and associated Windows environment software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite);
skill in utilizing on-line legal research platforms, and video, audio and web
conferencing; ability to maintain organized and accurate files/records; ability
manage time effectively; ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism
and ethical interactions.

Associate Degree in paralegal studies; five or more years of related experience in a law firm or in-house legal department; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have safe work and driving habits.Employment Type: Full-Time
